My carer has brought her friends laptop to see if I can sort it, her daughter reset the login password just as the battery went flat on her, she has asked if I can retrieve it, there are loads of products to retrieve login details but which is the best?

is it XP?

Jules - try booting in safe mode (press f8 when it is booting) and login as administrator. Hopefully the admin password will have been left blank.

Here you will be able to change passwords, create a new account and move photos etc as much as you need.

yeah its xp prof Its asking me to press ctrl alt delete to get to log in, once I do that it wants user name and password and login to school domain

press ctrl alt del twice, this will take you to the old style login screen, type in Administrator, leave the password blank and just hope no one ever set an admin password

gone into safe mode and wont let me log in

you have a PM

In safe mode (and normal) does it have the option to 'log on to'? If so, change that to the option that has (this computer) next to it. Then try the above again.

Sounds like it is on a school domain/network. In which case they will have probably set an administrator password.

done but same result the admin has a password

when you start in safe mode does it give the option for Admin login and does it require a password?

Jules - you may be into a grey area if this is a school machine and domain controlled.

I have a piece of software I use to get passwords but you already have to be in windows to get it to run.

It may be that the user has changed their password on the domain, and wont be able to change until they are back on the network via an admin.

No just username then password then log on to, nothing saying administrator

Ok mate thanks fellas

you could try this:
where it says username, replace whatever the username is with
administrator
and leave the password empty

a windows 2000 disk might let you in

There are pieces of software which will allow you to reset the local admin password but if this is a schools laptop, I wouldnt reccomend it.

The username and password will be a domain one so someone will need to contact the schools IT department for them to reset it using Active Directory, you will then need to get the laptop connected to the schools network in order for the laptop to sync and login with the password which it has been reset too.

I seriously wouldnt try and bypass the local admin logon of a schools laptop, the owner will be in breach of the IT security policy and may be subject to disiplinary action if found out

I work in the IT department for a large local government department

I have given up on it, thanks all for your help

:agree: What he said.

I also work on MOD security sites, if the laptop is owned by a local gov department or a commercial company for that matter then it would be best to let the correct IT/Support dept to sort it.

Julian, look on the web for a copy of Hirens Bootdisk.

Download it and make a cd, then boot from the cd.

One of the options is password recovery. It allows you to recover an XP admin password. If needed you can change it.

It's one of the few ways I know, but you must boot from the CD you make :D

If it's on a domain, can you change a password when it's offline? Have you tried the old login password

In the old version of XP you could boot to DOS and access all files from all accounts without needing login details. It was a serious security flaw that I think was fixed in later versions, but would be worth a shot.

I have not heard of a way but with enough knowledge, anything it possible.

I will again enforce the fact that bypassing the laptops security, will breach the owners (technically the government) IT security policy. This may seem trivial to the average IT user but could lead to disiplinary or even prosecution depending on how far the Schools IT department wanted to take it.

Go though the propper channels, its not worth the risk

She has taken it away for school to sort out after the summer hols, her daughter just cant do some projects she was doing thats all.

i did get an ex compay laptop admin to reset but it lost some data. it might have been psooible to get data from the drive by making it exteral.

i have just got some data off for my mate, that was a knacked computer problem
