When going onto the programs menu fom the start button on vista I find that some programs put themselves into folders when installing wheras others do not.

How do I add a new folder into which I can put a few program into so that I can tidy up the list?

Click on;
Computer -> HDD (C://) -> Program Files

In the program files menu you have all the files and folders that are on the start menu, so just re-arrange as required :)

Hi Jamie

I have added new folders in the program files list but when I go start -> all programs the directories do not show int he list?
 
Maybe you might need to re-start the PC?
Not too sure, but that would be my reckoning

Er, no.

The Start Menu folder is located in two places. The profile-based one is here:

Computer > Local Disk (C:) Users > User > AppData > Roaming > Microsoft > Windows > Start Menu > Programs

And the default one is here:

Computer > Local Disk (C:) > ProgramData > Microsoft > Windows > Start Menu > Programs

Add a new folder to either directory and you'll be able to move your errant program entries around to your heart's desire.

NB. There are also other locations for slightly different types of Start Menu entries, but we'll gloss over them for now.

Yes that worked I was using a custom profile so I needed to add them to the custom profile

Just in case anyone is reading this thread, DO NOT rearrange your Program Files folder!!
 
If you type the first few letters of the program you want to run into the 'start search' box at the bottom then the menu changes to show everything that matches. Much quicker than going in the 'all programs' folder menu.

In XP I always rearranged my start menu programs into subject groups in subfolders. With Vista I don't bother any more and just use the start search box.
