Winter kit - upgrade or not?

... this has probably been done to death but here I go ...

I am planing a trip up north (Tromso, Norway or Lapland, Finland) in January to photograph Polar bear and (if I get lucky) Northern lights, something I have always wanted to do and really excited about it.

I happen to be a newb and own a Nikon D40x with an 18-55mm kit lens (yes! Nikon, my first love), what I want to know is if this will be sufficient. I want to make the most of the trip as it is a once in a life time thing for me. The operating temperature of the D40x is 0-40deg. C, will it be able to cope? I don't mind spending on upgrades (within reason) and have been saving up for a new lens anyway. I understand I will need a wide angle for the Aurora and a decent range for the wildlife. I am not sure if it is a good idea to go for, say an 18-200 due to slower speed (and miss out on that one shot that would have made the trip worth wile :bonk:)

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Also, any other suggestions i.e. what filters to choose, number of batteries to carry etc would be great.

I'm sure your kit will be fine and yes a wide angle lens for the Aurora is a good idea.... You just need a long enough exposure to capture the light.

I also note you're going to Lapland! A flash would be a good thing to have as I believe they have some really good dancers :) I look foreward to seeing the pics :D ... enjoy the holiday :thumbs:
