Tony, when do you need to use it, if youre stuck i can lend you mine tonight and tomorrow but ill probably need it back for Thursday night myself.

XP Pro installed.

yeagh a usb keyboard works on it.. just gonna be awkward.. I have thurs and fri evening, sat afternoon and next tuesday.. then no wire work for a while afaik .. maybe struggle through for now :)

if i was looking for a quick laptop.. i have a good idea of spec.. BUT have no idea what I am loking for re quality screen... current advent is very poor and the pics look miles diff on my desktop syncmaster 913n which isnt state of the art anyways :)

Cheers gary :) but thur and frid and sat needed :) like i say.. may struggle through with usb KB for now if all else fails :)

thanks :)

have phoned a local repair number who have taken details.. there gonna get back to me with a price for fitting a new KB .. I could buy cheap but i cant fit..

added to that.. the advent isnt the best screen so maybe this pushes me over to get another..

also sent daughter number 1 up town to get me a foldaway rubber roll up whatever keyboard so.. will get through weekend now... red alert now down to orange alert :)

Changing a keyboard is fairly simple. Google how to rplace keyboard "your lappy" and see what you get.

Seconded. Unuusual to lose half the keyboard without the keyboard ribben cable breaking and that's not usual from a drop.

Some have a plug, others have a plug system where the ribbon cable plugs in. If it's come partially out this would explain the symptoms.

Have a sony in the office atm which has half the keyboard working, the other half not. Guessing it has 2 contacts to the mainboard...

absoloute nigthmare:(

took a usb keyboard with me to huddersfield today.. aftre game it decided to work and not work as it felt like it :( took ages to post the pics but got there in end.. not much description wiht them ...erk ..

decided the advent laptop with 12inch screen is pants anyways... so need a new laptop urgent.. am loking on pcworld website now..

do you take 15 or 17 inch pitchside?

looking at dell studio15 range.. am i on right track... 429 refurb 15.4 screen..

lots of inspiron 1520 dell laptops available as well... studio15 or inspiron 1520 ?

Avoid the Studio and Inspiron ranges like the plague Tony, ive got one of each in my house the kids and wife use and they are totally pants, seriously mate theyre rubbish, even the so called top of the ranges are utter garbage, i bet the first time you put it down on your bag the screen bezel will come off, the really arent meant for use outdoors, dont get me going about the horrible CCFL screens they also use.

If you could get to my place and see my Dell Latitude in action you wouldnt look elsewhere, a Dell Vostro if you can find one with the decent 1440x900 WXGA+ screen would be a more affprdable option.

How about this, comes with Vista business and you can downgrade to XP good screen but you would need to check if it is "gloss" or "matte", matte is best, 3 years onsite warranty with Dell, 7200 rpm hard drive, free delivery and only £469 all in

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/DELL-Vostro-1720-2-2ghz-250HD-3GB-XP-PRO-VISTA-NEW_W0QQitemZ300350729521QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Computing_Laptops_EH?hash=item45ee4c6d31&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

This is lower spec and 15 inch screen

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/DELL-Vostro-1520-2-00ghz-Laptop-2GIG-160HD-Vista-e880_W0QQitemZ300348926625QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Computing_Laptops_EH?hash=item45ee30eaa1&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

Bit cheaper and lower spec, higher res screen but poorer quality screen as its the glossy true life, great indoors but impossible to work on outside unless in serious shade.

Both are very reputable sellers so no worries there and are giving about a 30-40% saving on buying direct from Dell

I would also advise you to avoid the consumer ranges, I'd be looking for something with fairly strong construction.

Is it going to be your main machine away from the pitchside? Are you going to just be processing images or just tagging/metadataing etc?

I think it will be his only machine as i recall Tony mentioning hooking his lappy to a monitor at home

i cant go on enough about how easily the Studio/XPS/Inspiron ranges will break if used as Tony would expect to use it in the field

Hiya.. Hey Gary my memory kicked in last night and I searched your old thread with your laptop spec from dell.. I also noted your comments about the bendy plastic other dell models ... no point you doing all that investigation and no one taking advantage..

I went to dell and did same spec as you listed.. you paid 845 and same spec now just over 11 hundred thats with vat and delivery... they wanted 45 to downgrade to xp.. yous eemed to infer it was free?

I ahve decided I am going to use it as my main computer as well.. currently the laptop is just for pitchside and i use a desktop... my mistake was letting my 16yr old use it when i wasnt :( but as i say its a crappy 12" advent

My required spec is.... STURDY, GOOD SCREEN

It wil be used for photo work only... with photoshop being the biggest bit of software... will ahve office and internet standard stuff .. otherwise its photoshop workstation really...

It will 100% NOT be used for games or films or music or anything like that... have been around computers long enough to know thats not gonna change :)

Will try them links you provided now gary

Tony, before spending your money youre more than welcome to come over to mine and check my latitude out just to make sure, the Vostros ive linked to above dont have the mag alloy base and screen backs and dont have the tough as teak hinges either, but apart from that theyre just as good spec wise

if you go for one with a dual operatring system itll likely have Vista installed with instructions how to downgrade to XP, however and ebay reseller worth his salt will do it for you if its not something youre too sure about, they should do it for free as well.

vostro 450 ... latitude 1,100

I already emailed the seller about the screen.. see what he says :)

Whats the exact screen you got neil and what resolution. there are many variations, ie XGA, WXGA, WXGW+, WSXGA. WUXGA, Truelife, etc, etc, some are CCFL and not true Lcd screens, they vary in res from 1024x768 through to a silly 1920x1200, have you calibrated it????

Some of the 15 inch have 1920x1200 CCFL Truelife screens, these are hyped as the top of the range screens but are terrible, text etc is so small on a 15 inch its impossible to caption photos and the glossy truelife makes it impossible to use outdoors, these are brilliant for watching DVD's ets but no use as a mobile work platform.

Ive owned just about every configuration going and to me the best option is clearly the WXGA+ 1440x900 with matte screen

is the 15.4IN WIDESCREEN WXGA+ 1440

its not calibrated, colour wise its not bad i just find it has a bit too much grain for some reason, including during video playback.. ive learned to live with it over the last couple of months though. its perfect on my 2x dell 20"'s at work however.

its odd, maybe its just the extra res but the 15.4'' WSXGA+ 1680 in my D820 looked so much better. shame the chipset wouldnt support more than 3gb lol

mailbox emptied... bit worried about neils comments though... erk :(

Best advice in that case would be to check one out before buying then, dont PC World stock the Dell business range ie Vostro and Latitudes

I personally see no grainyness on my screen and ive been qouted as saying the quality is as close to my Dell 2407 24 inch monitor as one could expect

nagh pc world (according to the website) only have thos lesser types.

i will scrape through tuesday at port vale that gives me a bit of free time not needing one to get sorted...

looking more and more like the latitude though.. thanks to garys investigations :)

The offer to borrow mine is still on the table, you can borrow it all week so long as ive got it back for Friday night at Headingley

I would worry too much mate..thanks for the offer as per... can struggle thought tueday night.. but gotta get sorted this week.. hard work as just spent a massive wedge on a 400mm lens which hopefully I will finally get tommorow (mon) the laptops a sort of hidden expense i wasnt expecting.

Going for the 450 quid ones seems good but is it false economy.. want summat that last so may get the specced up one from dell.

decisions decisions :)
