Hi all newbie here so be gentle :)

Ive upgraded to a canon 60d and love my photography , ive always been in to landscape but moving over to 'photographing in the home' and trying to set-up my own way to do portrait, so im going to have to learn about flashes!

The 60d has flash control , but the question is what flash to buy to make use of it ? ive seen there are Yongnuo flashes cheap on ebay but i just dont know were to start... any help out there ?
 
A good place to start with off-camera flash is the strobist 101 tutorial plus some model specific research for what your camera is compatible with.

Yongnuo do some very nice flashes, but I don't think your onboard flash controller will communicate with any of them.
 
i thought the commander will only work with canon flashes. i could be wrong.
 
Hi ignore my first post, i have just read a thread where someone is having trouble with a 7D and the jessops flash. there good for slave though.:thumbs:

hum just not sure i want to spend the money on the 430 canon when the YONGNUO YN468 TTL seems to do the same thing ?

That link was interesting i now need to just find the best kit to buy !
 
but do they only fire if the main flash is up ? i thought that had to act as the master?
 
The nissin Di622 MKII supports wireless ETTL.

My Di622 certainly feels built to the task. And you can get two for the price of one 430exII.
The only thing it lacks is high speed sync. This means it is of limited use as an outdoor fill in flash (any shot that requires a shutter speed higher than 1/250sec).
 
ah i thought id narrowed it down to either a Yongnuo's YN465 or YN 468 then get a sender to fire then or cable , i now have another option ! oh dear confused....
 
i was 'about' to buy a RF-602 and a YN465 but now not sure ! confused ...

Yes, the OB flash has to be up but you dont have to have it affecting the image. You can set it to just act as a trigger as well as two other modes (ive not used them so i dont know how useful they are).

I think its worth spending a bit more money to get a Canon as you know it will be 100% compatible, and you get the build quality and reliability by keeping within the Canon system.
You may at some stage get a better camera but the flash will stay with you for years.

IMO of course.
 
The Canon wireless flash system is pretty good. As long as you use compatible units you can make use of wireless ETTL without the need for 3rd party triggers. Personally I would stick with Canon, but a I know a few people on here use the Nissan units without any issues. I use a 430EX2 and now wouldn't be without the wireless flash facility.

The pop up flash on the body has to be in the up position, and although it appears to fire, it can be set up not to have any effect on the shot.

Recently bought a Nissin di-622 Mk11 for £125 and it works very well with my 7D.
 
I wouldn't spend serious money without high speed sync, which means the Canon 430 or cheaper Metz 50 AF-1 (good gun).
 
Ah so i would not need the 602 wirless remotes ? im still tempted with the 465 as its ETTL and by the sounds of it will work wireless without anything , i can always get a 430 canon flash at a later date as i image i will end up wanting 2 anyway, anyone used the 465 ?
 
ah just found a really good comparison sote , seems the 622mk2 is the one to go for as it is indeed wireless so i think im getting there

Nissin is good. Make sure you don't want high speed sync though. Basically, if you want to do fill-in flash outdoors, you'll need it.
