Sorry if this has been asked a million times already, but iM looking to be able to fire my flash when of camera with out having to use a cable.

Ive seen loads of various items on the bay that will do it, but i have no idea if I am buying the right bit of kit!

Advice or links please....

If you want ittl metering these are about the cheapest you will find. Loads cheaper with manual metering.

What camera and flash do you have? You may be able to trigger your flash without having to buy anything.

That said, the Yongnou, etc. are very handy.

D300 and flash is currently a Jessops but looking to upgrade to an SB600 very shortly.

I know I can use infra red to trigger, but as my main use is shooting fish in aquariums with the flash over the top of the tank - I cant allow the on camera flash to fire as it will reflect.

Try and go for the Sb800 and above if you can and are thinking of using nikon cls. If you are going to be using trigger for non ttl have a look at yn603 or yn622 for ttl.
