Hey all

I've got a Canon 400D and a 430EXii. I'd like to get the flash off camera, preferably wirelessly. Could someone advise me as to the best way to head to do this fairly cheaply. I'm fairly sure that the info is out there on these boards, but after various searches it's apparent that my knowledge on this is equal to my knowledge of knitting, so a prod in the right direction would be great

Not looking for fancy, and second hand is a likely option.
 
If you just want cheap off-camera flash, manual exposure control only, then a set of radio triggers - eg Yongnuo RF-602 for £35 from Amazon.

If you want to retain E-TTL, then you need a master controller. Various options from £80 -£400. Or a cord.
 
Cheers guys, quite happy with manual, I only ever use the flash in manual at the minute anyway (learned to use the camera quick doing that, so figure the same applies).

That looks like an investment in the next few days.

that's strange that you don't use ETTL with exposure compensation, and prefer to use manual flash when on camera :thinking: unless you are referring only to manual camera mode rather than manual flash?

Everything in manual (flash and all). TBH it's partly because I'm too idle to RTFM, partly because I want to learn exactly whats going on with my flash, and partly because because I just haven't used it enough to know whats what. Need to practice more.
 
fair enough, you should have no probs with the rf-602 then :) I have them, and it does the job, although is trial and error for me (stills only, I wouldn't trust myself with it for real time off camera with people)

My poor family are going to end up guinea pigs, probably go round to my sisters house and force her to pose for photos. She hates it, but I have to practice on someone and she's photogenic. Reading up it looks like you can fire the shutter remotely with those triggers too, so I might end up setting the camera up by the bird feeder and see how many more duffers I can get
 
I have the rf602, they are great never really let me down.
Would recommend getting 3 receivers 1 trigger.
 
James why not hang on a little until the meet, if it goes ahead you can try my triggers.
I also got one of these.

they do the 603 which has a handy function of being both a trigger and receiver, a set like this which could be used as a remote trigger and fire the flash seperately.
 
Thanks to all for the various offers. Work permitting I'm definitely up for the meet. Simon, my patience is likely to be tested if I wait so long, but I might just take you up on that. I tend to steam ahead when I get ideas like this one. If I purchase in the meantime expect a barrage of questions.

On the subject of ETTL, I couldn't sleep last night so there I was in my room finally RTFM'ing, now understand high speed sync and ETTL :D

Also now have a much better understanding of how to underexpose background and correctly expose foreground, making me want to spend a small fortune on more lights. Damn you photography, this was supposed to be a cheap hobby...

Yeah...good luck with that one :D

So far spent about £7000 and still counting...:cuckoo:

I find ETTL superb to use, especially wireless control of several speedlites. Not everyones cup of tea, most prefer manual control with triggers, but when it works its like magic.

Big advantage of the RF-603 is the shoot-through facility, so you can have both a flash on-camera and a second remote, with one transceiver set.

On-camera gun should retain E-TTL.

I am just the same and have learned a lot, I now research ask and find.
It was why I have 3 types of adapters, 1 kind are now just rubbish.
I am hoping to learn more about control at the meet up.

When you've decided and sourced your choice of OCF gear, check out strobist.com, Joe McNally, Syl Arena, Chase Jarvis, Zack Arias...the list is endless but there is some really really good info out there on the 'net. It's all about how you use your light, not really how you fire the flash, that's important.

Do Yongnuo do one that works with eTTL?
 
I dont think yongnuo do any flashguns or triggers that can use TTL wirelessly (OCF). They do a flashgun that can use ttl when mounted on the hotshoe though.

They do the ST-E2 clone, but not a radio E-TTL. Actually Yongnuo have shown a prototype, but nothing more.

Pocket Wizard or Radio Poppers for that - £400.
