Hi guys i have just brought a wireless usb adapter for our old laptop..

I have uploaded the software and am in the process of trying to setup the orange setup disc..

It is telling me now to turn off the pc's firewall ? I never knew i had one on it ? where would i find this and how would i turn it up.

Many thanks in advance .

I may need some more help before i am done lol

Start/Control Panel/ windows firewall

some software struggles if you have it turned on
do have auntie virus running?

Have you got the model number??? is it a wireless Router? Print server? 3G wireless mobile broadband???

Windows has its own Firewall which you can disable in the control panel.

OK so the firewall is now off windows own..!

hmmmmmm thats not helping

md

what's it saying now?

Have you successfully loaded the adaptor software ?

Are you now trying to load the Orange software and if so has this been done successfully ?

Yes adapter loaded ok

orange loads right uptill the end where its trying to connect to the wireless pc

If i click on the orange icon it comes up cannot find server

Ok. Normally you can just load the adaptor and then connect to the router without additional ISP related software (even when it's provided). It may be worth trying to avoid or by-pass the Orange software. Can you access the adaptor software itself and run it ?

Which wireless router are you using?

what settings do you have on your wireless router
MAC filter?
encryption?
???

Yes its "belkin" if thats makes a difference ?

when i open it and look in the current status the signal strength is full but the computer has a red line going to the router and then the same from there to the internet icon...

Ok, that's a good start as it appears that the adaptor and router recognise each other. Do you know if your Router is encrypted (most ISP ones are from new) and do you have a WEP code or similar provided with it ? I may to go in a second, if so one of the others should be able to pick it up from here...

I have the web key for the livebox i have put that into the laptop a few times to no avail.

does the router have any encryption
typically WEP?
if it does whatever WEP key the router uses, the lap dancer will need to use the same

note that's WEP not web

Yep its the wep code i am using but alas its not working for me.....

very odd
if router and lapdancer are both set yo use WEP
and you've given both the same WEP code it should work (damned hardware)

try opening a DOS window (no, listen)
click start, run, cmd
then type ipconfig /all into the DOS window
that'll tell you what settings the lap dancer had
you might also try ipconfig /renew
that'll ask it to get a new IP address

lol mike your getting technical on me now matey

i have run the ipconfig/all

and have that page open now.

hee hee
the important bit is does the wirless doodah have an IP address?
and is it anything like any of the other IP addresses on you other pooters?

0.0.0.0.

also says At the top ip routing enabled .........: no

mine says that too, so we can cross that off
0.0.0.0 is a bad thing

suspect we're getting ahead of ourselves then
minimise that for now, we'll need it later
if you right click the tray icon (looks like a pooter screen with radiation sickness
it should allow you to show either show wireless networks or open network connections
...

we have

Choose a wireless network..

but in the screen it says

windows cannot configure this wireless connection

aha
that'll be bcos orange has "taken over" management of the wireless, my O2 adapter in the studio does that too
you'll need to fire up it's equivalent
you need a display that shows you the available networks
mebbe there's an orange icon in the sytem tray???
...

I can only find the livebox " if i go through the belkin adapter"

Nothing else

but that's ok - it's what you want to connect to
what happens when you try to connect to it (@ the risk of going back to post #1!)

current status

available networks " i highlight livebox"

then click connect

little box opens asking to type in encrytion key

i typr in the wep code click connect

then nothing....?

it just goes back to the current status page
md

do you get the chance to select wep?
the other options might be WPA

I have to type the encrytion key in so yes i think .. this is where i have been putting the wep code as its the only code i can think of putting there

md

very odd
to get that far and not connect
it does make me wonder if you have the correct WEP code

can you check on the router what it's actually using?

How do you do that.

i have the other laptop on now and am looking at the settings on that to see if i can get any help

I anticipated that question
just "ad a word" with my wireless router
and of course the wep key is encrypted

the only way to be really sure is give both ends a new wep key
but that might b****r up everything that connects to the router!!!

the secret is to keep careful notes
but like backups - you only find out just after it's too late!

pps I don't want you to tell me your wep key
but is it numeric or alpha
it may be case sensitive?

Thanks for all the help matey..

not really helped - we didn't get a result

mebbe switch it all off - take a beer or 3

won't fix the problem, but you won't care any more!!!

just had a thought
I've added MAC filtering to my router
you've not done the same have you?

you should be able to ask the router if MAC filter is on

Is there not a button on the livebox that you press whilst trying to connect wireless adapters, this auto configs the wep key.

Might just be on newer ones.
