You can buy cheap (£50) usb radio transmitters to turn a USB device into a wireless device. You do have to plug the USB into the mains device side but USB runs off a pretty low power so you could easily use a small battery pack.

Anyone ever tried this or know about this stuff?

You have a 5D why dont you just use EOS utilities that came with the camera? It's even cheaper than buying anything as everything is supplied in the box?

 what a retard lmao. Sorry completely missed that
I think what you have suggested might be one of the best ideas as the Canon WFT's aren't cheap

hah no worries.

Ive been looking at the options and how to put one together and it would be around $100 for small and compact or $35 for slightly larger.

Much better than the canon WT thing as I could have full control over the camera too wirelessly!

What about an eye-fi card? With an SD to CF Card adaptor?

Your thread title says "Wireless tether on the cheap" ????

It's either wireless or tethered.

So easily and in 1 word define a way of getting photos to display on the computer screen and have full control over camera functions without saying tethered?

I saw a post about these wireless USB adapters on a blog months ago, but I've yet to find anywhere in the UK that sells them. I seem to remember they were about $50 or so ordering from the US (plus shipping, customs, tax, etc).

think the 'pro' ones do, check them out. Loads of discussion on the event photographers society forum about eye fi cards.

google around about the wireless usb, the main issue seems to be the form factor of the receiver, plus a DIY battery pack to power it, but other than that, by all accounts they works fine.

The newer WiFis do support sending RAW files, although I haven't used one myself so can't vouch for reliability or speed. There were some post on the Dgrin forum a while ago about someone who made Canon's utility work over a wireless USB link, but changing the remote (camera) end from mains to battery powered was a bit of work if I remember correctly.

You also have the hassle of it still being ridiculously slow to transfer 12MB+ RAW files over WiFi, regardless of whether you're using an Eye-Fi, Wireless USB or a proper WiFi grip.

There's no real reason why you should need to transfer RAW over WiFi unless somebody is sat there on a PC editing while you're still shooting.

When I shoot with my WiFi grip, I just shoot RAW+JPG with the RAW files saved to the CompactFlash card (even the "lesser quality" Eye-Fi cards support this too), and the JPG files sent over WiFi to the PC for quick viewing/printing.

Neat, I hadn't seen that article, looks a lot more promising than the one I'd seen previously (which is the one he linked to in his article with the wireless USB adapters that don't seem to be for sale anywhere). :)
