Hi all, I'm using my D700 to shoot families in their homes & for social events.

I have been using a 1.5m USB cable, but it seems to be a bit hit and miss.
Now I'm not sure if this is down to the camera USB slot or the length of cable
:thinking:

I saw on the web a while back a link to a made up wireless kit, made from some bits off amazon.
However I cant for the life of me find it, just some articles about it, nothing to the one I saw that had the instructions!

Much as I would love the genuine Nikon article, its a big investment (that will follow once I actually start clawing back some of my investments)

Alternatively has anyone used long length cables, and its worked fine every shot?:help:
 
A USB cable should be OK if you have a good cable and are using the right software... I've found that some are rubbish and some not so - and price is sometimes no guarantee of quality...

For the money, even a relatively cheap WiFi system would be outrageously expensive in my book for the gains netted...
Besides which I'd hate for the clients to be able to view the images before I'd P&P'd them...
Shoot it all on 8Gb cards - maintain an air of mysterious aloofness and come back another day with the finished, breathtaking images - it's also another chance to raid the biccy-jar and check out the teenage-daughter and her mates...:cool:
 
are you using an active cable? we use them when daisy chaining them together

apart from that have you looked up eye-fi cards? they might do what you want

If you just want picture transfer to the computer then eye-fi might be the answer. Not Cheap though especailly as you need a "pro" version to send RAW files.

eye-fi is a no go with the D700, wrong size card slot to use an SD adaptor, works fine with a D300 though.
Rob, Cheers for the thoughts, thats fine for the in house stuff, however for the events stuff (messes etc) I have to be able to have stuff go through PDQ as I print on the night.
I might look into the active USB route though, and I am going to try some different software, using 'sofortbild' at the mo which can be a bit hit and miss.
 
The canon one does adhoc to a lappy and will cope with encryption which is what I want for events but I can't justify the expense right now :(

eyefi need a real network I think? also don't do what I want them to with storing second set of images on card

I had a feeling that might be the case - we usually go 2-up on Mess functions - one does the shooting (tethered to a lappy) the other does P&P and printing on-site via a series of pre-recorded photoshop actions...

hahaha...next stop, Herford - start on 1st June...lucky me!
I get back from here - 4 weeks' POTL, go to Germany then 2 weeks easter leave, followed by 2 weeks' relocation leave, followed by six weeks annual leave (carried over with the commander's permission).
Then Resettlement Leave, followed by Termination Leave followed by Civvi Street on December 4th!

I basically do no more work after this Tour and I get paid up to December...and claim BFG benefits such as Petrol coupons etc...
It'll be a drag re-BFG'ing the Cougar (not going to bother with the Mustang, though it'll be over there too - just not on camp), but I'll manage...

yep, but you just need to get a home style router (homehub or similar). Check out mike weeks' forum, lots of info on there on what works and doesn't.
 
I use Nikon Camera Control Pro and a 3M USB cable, I've never had it fail on me or miss a shot
 
You shouldn't miss a single shot if you're attached by USB cable. Sounds like the cable is dodgy. You can daisy chain USB cable up to 20m if you use repeater connections. I've done that before and it's worked well.

I've used the Nikon wireless transmitter (WT-3 and WT-4) for coming up to 1,000 events now - it's rock solid. Big investment, but worth every penny - to me.

You can set the unit to only transmit the thumbnails if you're looking just to show the images, though we transfer 2mb files. You wouldn't want to transmit raw files though.

We often shoot directly to iPad for show if we don't need the images on the main server immediately.
 
but eye-fi SD card + CF (sorry Canon I am talking) just neat and no messy cable?
