Hi Guys

Is there such a thing as a propper wireless flash trigger for Canon Digital Cameras using Canon Flash guns ie 580EX etc. must retain full TTL control though.

And by wireless I mean wireless not wire less like the canon system

One that uses Radio (Wireless) not Infra Red (Wire Less)

One that can be reliably used out doors.

I have searched and found nothing other than basic none TTL triggers.

Actually, i dont think there is.

May i ask why the specifics?
 
Radio Poppers will do exactly what your after.

but...

They are flippin expensive and will have to imported but do maintain full ettl and are RF based

You've totally lost me. I can't make head-nor-tail of what you've posted.

Tetra is the system used by emergency services in the UK so if an ambulance goes past your venue using their radio it could (in theory) trigger your flash! lol

Sorry, I didn't realise 'tx' meant transmit. Now I'm with you both.

So, in theory, this system is potentially the best of both worlds? Wireless flash triggering at large distances while still retaining E-TTL metering capability?

But would that require you to have one PX Receiver per flash unit?
 
TETRA is the digital radio system used by the emergency services in the UK. Radio poppers sold in the USA use the same frequency as TETRA. TETRA puts out more power than the radio poppers do therefore TETRA systems cover a greater range than the lower powered radio poppers. The TETRA signals are transmitted over greater times. The radio poppers only transmit small bursts. The longer times of the signals from the TETRA transmissions are very likely to cause problems with the radiopopper receivers but the short burst from the radiopoppers are less likely to cause problems to the TETRA system. I must also point out that it is illegal to transmit a radio signal on the TETRA frequency.

The radiopopper people state that if the USA verions were to be used in the UK then they could missfire and do other strange and annoying things.
 
Only way of retaining ETTL is the ST-E2 - I just ordered one.

Radio triggers will not retain E-TTL
 
I'm also incredibly impressed, but if I've got the theory about how they work correct, for a two flash set-up, at the current exchange rate, you'd be looking at roughly £515.

Do excuse me while I spit my gin and tonic all over my monitor.

Do you know what fequency they work on?

Edit I read the spcs - 916MHz - That is in the 2G mobile phone band.... Orange and Vf have many 2G sites using the 90MHz band.
Another Edit - Emergency Service do NOT use the 900MHz frequency band.

Radioastronomy on 926-934 MHz - used for pulsars.
Harmonised Band for TETRA (BASE) 915-921 MHz - Awaiting closure of TACS Services within the UK.
CEPT Recommendations T/R 20-01, T/R 22-03, T/R 22-05, T/R 25-08, T/R 25-09,T/R 72-01, T/R 75-02 refer.

THere are many Tetra bands though and I'm not sure whether emergency services are using that 916MHz band yet but it would be advisable to wait for a UK introduction.
 
Easier? Not necessarily. More reliable? Doubtful. An option? Certainly.

But if you could still retain full E-TTL metering while wirelessly triggering a couple of off-camera flashes, wouldn't it be nice to have that option open to you?

This is a very old thread, there are lots of ettl radio triggers about now. Phottix Odin, pocket wizards, pixel king, radio popper etc. all quite expensive but all seem to work :)
