looking at either the tamron 200-500mm f5-6.3 DI or the sigma 150-500mm f5-6.3 RF DG OS for my canon 450d for motorsport witch is the better of the two or is there somthing better for the same sort of price what sort of price can u get thes for secand hand and weres the bst place to get them if i go for second hand has any one got any advise
 
No experience of the Tamron but these were from my first try at Motorsport with the Sigma.

the sigma was my origanl choice but then i was looking at the tamron if i went for the sigma has any one got advise on buying one new or secondhand and on prices and were to buy
 
If I was looking to get one now I'd have to go for the Sigma. Simply for me, the addition of stabilisation on a lens that length would be the clincher.
I was looking at getting one a few months ago, then my finances improved and I went for a Canon 100-400 L. From the look of Kens pictures above you'd be hard pressed to improve on the IQ with the Tamron. I've seen the Sigma's go from around £500 on the forum and on ebay for a second hand one, but you can get a new one for around £600 if you shop around and dont mind getting imports.

I don't know what your budget is, but I've always been impressed by the Canon 70-200mm f4. You can always stick an extender on it for greater range.
The non IS version is going to cost over £300 and the IS version probably nearer £700.
But they are soooooooo light.
 
The only problem with the 70-200 f4 is that if you put a 1.4 on it the reach will only be 280 which is just over half that of the tamron or the sigma the OP mentioned. I know the sigma is about twice the price, but its nearly twice the length and OS to boot.

I don't shoot motorsport but I was under the impression that you didn't really need really long lenses.
The reduced weight of the Canon lens will make it easier to hand hold.

What lenses do you currently have ?

I'm not aware of the Tamron, but do hear good reports on the Sigma lens. A good place to look for new prices is

Another option is the Canon 70-300IS model, I've used it for motorsport and works a treat. You do loose the top end focal range though, so depends on where you are shooting as to if this is a hinderance. The 70-200L series lenses are brilliant, but again, your loosing more top end.

Keep an eye on the classifieds here for 2nd hand lenses.

I would definitely go for the sigma.
I don't know how they compare on IQ, but the sigma has OS and HSM, two features I wouldn't be without on a lens like this that the tamron lacks.

The sigma is the best you can get in that price range, certainly punches above it's weight.

Don't forget you can only use the 1.4 extender on the f4 though, if you use the 2x you lose autofocus.

I recently bought the Siggy 150-500 IS, I got a used but totally mint copy from MPB. Great lens, very sharp and has good reach, but be aware it's a little on the heavy side.
