Very nice mate, sorry i couldnt make it. You need to make more room on the left and less on the right on the 1st image to let the bird look into the pic.Good to see this still hanging around.

cheers for those comments, i will bear that in mind when shooting next time, but as first one is uncropped i can't recrop it

Alastair, i found the same with my first few images on that perch. I had to move my focus point to the right of the viewfinder on the camera to focus on the eye area.

Forgot to mention that i have the benefit of a zoom lens which helps compose on that perch ( Sigma 120-300 )

Both good, but I really like the 1st shot, nice simple background really brings the detail out, I don't mind the composition at all, sometimes rules are there to be broken !! lol

I agree the bird would look better being framed over to the right in this instance to give him more room to look into. Its still a good capture with a nice clean back ground.

thanks for the comments! out of interest whats the defining feature(s) that show that its a juvenile, and am i correct when i say its a male?

The defining feature is the red cap of any juv. They loss the cap and if female just have the black cap, if a male will have a black cap and red nape of the neck but not on the head.

2 great shots, I think I agree with Mark re the comp of the first image though it is possible including more of that perch on the left would cause it to dominate the shot.
