I love that 2nd shot! 
I always find it difficult to leave feedback for images like these as I do not like artificial backgrounds at all. I do feel that in this case that the actual action of the bird has kept attention on him/her a bit more & that's why I think I prefer this shot to some others taken in the same kind of surroundings (you do need to watch how you crop your images though as they can look a bit unbalanced with too little space at the base of the frame)

Thanks Mike, I like no2 best myself. I agree with the crop suggestion. I may see about redoing the crop.
