Hi all,

Ive just received a 100-400mm L IS and blinking flip I cant believe how heavy it is, my 70-200mm L IS is quite heavy but this baby weighs a ton!

I cant wait to test it out this weekend at Brands Hatch, the only down side is the fact I've got to give it back, as its a rental lens (from Lenses for Hire). But I can see me buying one of these in the near future, damn and Kerso has restocked again, my credit card is going to get some hammer soon methinks

Just thought id share my lens porn :>

Pics or it didn't happen :)

I had a play with that in Jessops the other day. It really is a beast! Hope you've got a good tripod - or muscles like Popeye ;)

Neither of the above! I think im going to have to get a monopod at least. Ive just had 10 mins buggering about in the garden and my arms ache, but apart from that Im loving already and Ive just convinced myself that I need to buy one of my own, as giving it back to LFH is going to be hard, incidentally Ill already recommend Lenses For Hire for those people who perhaps want to try before they buy, great service all round.

I need to source a suitable monopod from somewhere that can deliver tomorrow, anyone recommend any makes/models/stockists?

According to the specs, it's actually lighter than the 70-200/2.8 IS
The 100-400 is 1380g whereas the 70-200 2.8 IS is 1470g

I suspect that it must be the balance that's different.

Bob

Edit...just realised...your 70-200 maybe the f/4 version.

I highly recommend the Manfrotto 685B. It's not cheap but is super quick to set up and if you have back problems like I have then it really makes life much easier.

Congrats on getting the 100-400..sounds like you have 'L' itis already:LOL:

Yes I have the f/4 version unfortunately, but you probably have a point about the balance, as of course the 70-200 doesn't get longer with the focal length unlike the 400.

Yeah it's a monster of a lens. Well worth it if you plan to use something like this alot. I think mine is great!!!!

I played with one in Jessops and it's an incredible lens. I don't have any L glass, but the speed at which it auto-focussed made me want to cry! It was so fast and quiet. One day... :D

Yup, they certainly take some getting used to!

I used mine in anger first at Farnborough and after a few hours of hand holding the thing I was knackered! Soon got used to it though.

I love mine, though it on the 40D with grip is a bit of a beast, it's amazing how quickly you get used to the weight!! I've been with out my quick release plate for 3 weeks now so have been doing a lot of hand held rather than on the monopod, so now when I put the 70-200 F4 IS on it feels like a feather!! And I'm just a wee girly!!

I'll be taking mine to Leuchers (work allowing), good job I usually have a big heavy ticket machine round my neck so I'm used to lugging weight around.
One thought, do you guys leave the tripod mount on the lens if you aren't using a tripod?

I don't recall this lens ever really feeling heavy or unwieldy, it's not much heavier than my 'brick' as for tripods, not really much use if you try for BIFs or PIFs eh.

By the time you get your own one, I'm sure you'll have developed the appropriate muscles :)

I don't really class this lens as heavy and never use it on a tripod, handheld every time ( as does my daughter age 13).

But you can't beat it for IQ and flexibility - enjoy

Rob

I love mine its a great lens, both the wife and I hand hold all the time, you soon get used to it. Have fun

Only ever hand held shot my 100-400. First few race meetings of the year makes me ache but it's great for muscle tone :D

I too hired one of these lens from Lenses for hire, for a trip to RIAT at Fairford, and quite honestly, I wasn't happy.

Because of his faultless service, pleasant manner, good conversation and a lens with which I got good pics, I now find myself trying to get the money together to buy one.

Which will now go on the 40D that arrived today, as opposed to the 400D package that I will soon be putting on ebay.

Blast and damnnation!

Ive found it ok when it's on the 40D maybe its a good balance I dunno, I have been quite surprised at some of the handheld shots. When not taking a pic I lay the lens across the inside of my forearm with the camera in the hand as you would with a baby and it's quite comfy to carry around like that.
I can understand it being heavy hanging round your neck all day.

100-400 L you do get used to very quickly as far as weight is concerned, as has been said the 70-200 2.8 is heavier and don't you know it after being attached to the thing at a Wedding for 17 hours ;)

My other half tells people I need to have a backpack to counterbalance the weight of the thing.

TBH I've not had a problem hand holding it and if I'm using it for a long period I'll try to sit down where I can then balance it on my left arm accross my knee.

I now have my eye on a 70-200mm f2.8 IS. Mad? Absolutely.

congratulations Gro187, it's a great piece of kit! The 100-400 is much easier to use after a few hours than the 70-200f2.8, got both of these and the 70-200 is damn heavy!

great purchase. Love my 100 - 400. Took a while to get used to it. Only ever hand held it. Took a while to get used to now no problem.
