I have used open office/neoffice for ages but they are really poor is in filling in application forms created in word. They make an absolute pigs ear of them. Text doesn't align properly and isn't anywhere near sensible when you have layout issues. Often boxes are over laid then there are gaps to the next section. It's just awful.

Has anyone used the apple equivalent of word on a mac (pages? ) and does it make a better job?

Yep I've used pages and its okay but haven't used open office to compare it to. You could get office 2011 for Mac for less that £40 if you have kids in school from somewhere like software4students.co.uk

Don't really want to fork out for MS office when it is only one aspect that is the problem. No kids either so wouldn't be that cheap!

Paid for version of neoffice is probably the next thing to try.

Those forms don't work with Word either. The trouble with open office and similar is that they are trying to reproduce something that is crap - MS Word.
