Right...lets assume I know nothing about making websites...
I currently have a flash website which I made via 'webeden'.
But after seeing many wordpress created sites on here...I want one :)

This is as far as I've got...
Downloaded wordpress (see lots of folders/files but can't 'use' it)
Do I need hosting or something? If so..any tips?
How do I begin making a site with wordpress? Am I right in thinking it isn't a 'program/software'?

Help please :'(
 
Now I feel stupid...Didn't realise you could sign up for wordpress. And that it's actually an online thing.........goodbye.:exit:

there are two sides to wordpress - wordpress.org is a downloadable software for writing sites that you then have to have hosted - wordpress.com is an online blog site which is a simple free way of setting up a site (its a lot more than just a blog)

I've a fair bit of experience with the latter so if you go that route and need a hand feel free to shout.

I'd also note that the wordpress.com site has its own very helpful support section , and forum.

After having a quick look, its not as easy as I thought it would be. (after intially having no idea)

'for writing sites' as in codes and difficult stuff? Or designing a site easily?

EDIT: basically what I want to do is have a wordpress blog that looks like a website. With info and pictures.

It's easy peasy. Lots of hosting have one click installs of wordpress. Then you go to the admin section: yourdomain/wp-admin/ where you add pages of content and add features (widgets). Most of it is drag and drop to re-order things around. There are lots of gallery plugins available too.
 
If you've downloaded Wordpress it needs to be installed to your online webspace account, and configured.

You can sign up to a hosted account at wordpress.com but its a bit limited compared to what it can do.
 
Using wordpress.com will seriously limited what you can do in the future and the image you create of your business - if you can work out how to install it (as said easy with many hosting packages) it will be much better for you.
 
Hmmm seems like installing it is the way to go then.
But I dont know ANYTHING about coding or things like that.
And hosting....hmm not sure either :\ any advice?
 
You need a hosting account with mysql database support. Typically £ 5 a month or so. You'll need a domain name to go with it - eg www.bencolon.co.uk

Its not difficult if you read the installation instructions. Takes about 10 minutes to install. Then choose the theme you want to run and any plugins and widgets.

Ok, I'll hunt around for a hosting package. (bearing in mind its must support mysql)

So it is literately click and drag, select and so on. No coding or tough stuff? :lol:
 
If your Web Host gives you access cpanel with an auto installer like Fantastico you can install it really quickly in a couple of clicks without having to upload any files via an ftp client.

I use wordpress as a CMS on my site (not that I really use it much to be honest =S). I have very little coding knowledge myself but I've not really run into any problems.

It's highly customisable with downloadable themes, plugins, widgets etc. Many are free but you can pay for some premium themes too. I think mine was around £20 which is pretty reasonable. :)
 
No coding unless you really want to, as most changes are made using options etc. and you can also use plugins and widgets. Choose a host that offers one click install and Cpanel. With some packages you can also get a free domain name. There is plenty of info. on the net to help you, including Wordpress.org. Also look at the various free themes available.

yep - I was one of them. All three of my blogs, and my photocart site as well. Their security was a joke and still is as far as I can tell, their customer services tried to blame everybody but themselves for the incident as well.

After that little joke (and it wasn't the first time it happened to them last year) then I had to take them to small claims court to recover my hosting fees (after I'd moved everything elsewhere first)

They are UK based, overpriced crap though. Personally I'd recommend VIDAHOST. Highly responsive and not badly priced
