Worldwide Insurance and Travel advice

I'm off to Mexico in may and I'm planning to take:

My d300
At least 3 lenses
Tripod and mini tripod
Filters ,batteries etc....

Go Pro & accessories
Tablet

On short haul trips I usually throw my stuff in my lower pro bag and carry it on as hand luggage but Ive never took this amount before which will clearly exceed my weight allowance.

So if any frequent travelers could answer a few questions please.....

Is or are there any worldwide insurance that would cover all this?
Would you feel safe leaving any equipment in your case?
What do you find the easiest method of traveling with your camera etc?

Any info and help would be appreciated?

i always keep my camera and lenses as hand luggage, no throwing it around a plane cargo hold then...
 
Firstly never check anything valuable or breakable into your hold luggage, you must carry it on board.
You should check with your carrier what their regulations are for carry on baggage, they vary greatly.
On our trip to Ecuador last year with Iberia I think the weight limit was 7kg but on our recent trip to Florida with BA the limit was 23kg!
Carry on baggage sizes also vary.
It's usually best to pack any monopod or tripods in your hold luggage.

I only insure my kit with my house insurers and they covered me for both trips.
 
House contents insurance covered me for trips abroad - check with your insurer. Mine didn't cover enything in hold baggage when flying so everything fragile went as hand luggage. Tripods always go in hold baggage as the morons who work in handling don't realise that some can be quite valuable - and they wouldn't be able to tell the difference anyhow.

For problems with weight allowance - fly BA.

Cameras, plus as much photo gear as takes me up to the limit, in my carry-on. Smaller, preferably heavy, items like lenses, spare batteries and my flash, in the many pockets in my fisherman's type jacket. If I'm really stuck I put one of the cameras on my shoulder to make room in the carry-on.

My camera bag, filled with things like socks that can be squished, goes in one of the checked cases and then things are rearranged after the flight.
 
You can save some weight with the bag you use. I when with a Thinktank airport accelerator V2. My Lowepro photo trekker weighs a couple of Kgs without anything in it, the Thinktank was 1.5 Kgs, but best check what weight you're allowed to carry on and what size of bag as well, even though there's a standard size, this differs with airlines especially the depth of the bag.

What do you find the easiest method of traveling with your camera etc? F-Stop Loka or similar rucksack for hand luggage (camera, laptop, hard drives)
