Would a canon 17-40 L cutt it for weddings

I'm looking at upgrading but would a canon 17-40 L cut it at a wedding or should I opt for another f2.8

Depends what you are using it for.

What other lenses do you have?

On a 7D (which is making an assumption based on your camera in your profile) I'd be looking at a 17-55 f2.8... The 17-40 is primarily designed for wider angles on a FF camera.

It depends how / what for you will use it, but most certainly I won't be your only lens. Wide shots outdoors - yes, no problem. Indoors without flash - not a good plan.
