Would a Canon AE-1 be a good starter

I'm sure it's a nice manual camera but maybe something a little more modern might be an idea as it'll allow manual and auto focus and compatibility with more modern lenses?

I have an eos 30 which I think is a nice thing and I bought an eos 100 for my niece. Both of these take ef lenses.

Also, will a 500mm lens be a great deal of use? Maybe a more "standard" zoom would be more useful?

It would be perfect, I learnt how to shoot film on mine. But I agree with the above 500mm is a lot are you sure you don't mean 50mm?

Something modern might be better but they are a bit boring and your daughter wouldn't learn much imho.

yes, sorry meant 50mm :help:
she has a 5D , and uses my lens, but she wants a manual to learn proper like:D

If I was buying I'd get something like an OM-10 with the manual adapter, lovely film cameras.

Sounds like a bargain and a very nice camera too for learning with.

If she has any lenses for the 5D (apart from yours!), I would suggest one of the EOS film bodies. A quick look at a recent Mifsuds ad in AP shows them ranging from £39 for an EOS 500 up to £699 for an EOS 1 V. Of course, there are other 2nd hand stockists but seeing your location, Mifsuds is probably not too far away and is well worth the trip.

If she already has a DSLR maybe she could try something completely different like a cheap rangefinder like a Canon QL17 or similar?

Nod, the eos 100 can be had for not a lot and takes ef lenses and another really good thing about it is that the shutter is very quiet.

thanks for the input, ill have a peek at mifsuds site, as i have a 50 1,4 anyway seems a shame to buy a redundant one
cheers all

Sorry, missed your offer knighthawk, ive oredered the EOS 3, £47, it will take all my lenses, so that's a bonus.
now, where to find some cheap film, in or out of date

"where to find some cheap film, in or out of date"

I've been buying film from the £1 shop, for £1

The Canon AE-1 wasn't a manual camera. It also had shutter-priority semi-auto mode. A brilliant camera with a top quality 50mm standard lens. It was Camera of the Year in 1977, IIRC.

I called in a used camera shop in Manchester city centre a couple of weeks ago. The guy offered me a fiver for my old AE-1 without seeing it :gag:

parts?

The manual camera in the canon "A" range was the AT1. Why not go for the Canon A1, it has 5 modes of operation. Also the quality camera was the F1 or F1n There are stacks of manual cameras

No probs.its a great camera ..I only wanted £30 as I am having a clear out....I would avoid the A series canons there getting old and have a lot of problems with the mirror bearings...The pentax A&ME series are good reliable camera and can be picked up cheap now days

If she wants to "learn proper", I would have thought a digital body would be much more beneficial, to be able to see the results right away rather than waiting for the prints to come back. But if she wants to get into the darkroom, perhaps a more modern body like the Nikon F80 would be better. Can use that in manual mode too.
