Cheers... ;) ... and you responded rather smartly m8...

I thought you might have a bit of trouble with the first though... :naughty:

Wasn't totally convinced about the Goldie either as it just did not look big enough there, or in the flight shot, or around the head/beak area... ... that's the trouble with these shows even the obvious can look odd... :cautious:

hmm I didn't check the flickr till just now I see what you mean Its not actually the "tall" sitting one the glove
but actually Goldie's are not that huge,
its certainly not and adult ( no white in the tail)
but then again steppes x Goldie's are becoming quite popular so it might even be a hybrid < goes off to do a google>

Seems as though I cocked up
not being totally convinced that it was a goldie
I showed Kenny's flickr images to a Friend that knows a lot more about eagles than
I do
He suggested that it was a black kite
again its not "quite right"
After a bit of research from the web site we now know that its a Yellow-billed Kite

Excellent stuff Cobra... (y) ... when I saw the flight shot my first thought was Black Kite but, as you say, that didn't quite fit... ... not being familiar with the birds of Gambia I wouldn't have placed the Yellow Billed Kite tag on it but it certainly fits the bill... :coat:

Thanks for checking it out though... ;)

No worries Ven it was bugging me too

.........

OK, my guess was tawny eagle.

Chris - to gyr's normally have a blue "eye ring"? Is that why you think it is a cross? (trying to learn)

Paul, thats a tough one
Gyr's tend to have yellow eye rings and ceres
Its sakers ( or certainly the saker hybrids) that tend to be blue.

There is more snobbery and elitism in falconry than any other sport
or past time ( "they" call it an art) that I have ever come across.
Some people are "proud" of the fact that they have a hybrid and will
call it such.

Some hybrids look like their "expensive" counter-part ie peregrines or Gyrs
and are called that by their owners.
Just to put this into perspective.
A decent full blooded ( Scottish) peregrine is worth IRO £2K
A decent full blooded WHITE Gyr falcon could be worth in excess of £10K

Some are sold off and then bred from.
They may not be pure, ( as above) and the unwitting breeder is then producing hybrids.
Its the same with the Peale's & anatums ( USA sub species of peregrine)
but thats another story

Its really very difficult to tell these days
( a compulsory DNA data base is being talked about)
What species is what
The best I can do is look at the falcon for "body form" and colouration
and give it my best guess.
Sorry for not really being able to help that much
