At the minute I am currently as Pentax user...I really like my K7 but despise the lens choice. Yes, there are aftermarket options, but I find the Pentax lens range somewhat frustrating (odd focal ranges and not particularly fast either apart from the silly money DA*'s).

I'm not really that tied in at the minute as i've only a few old manual lenses for it at the moment but with my birthday a week or so away am looking at some newer AF's. I'm considering moving back over to Nikon (went to the K7 from a D200) as the versatility compared to Pentax is there (FF, accessories, lens choice etc).

I'm not looking to spend more on a body, but use any extra cash on glass so the sale of my K7 should cover a good condition D90. I know there will be no weather sealing, no in-camera stabilisation and build quality isn't as good, but that isnt really an issue to me anymore.

so question is...would I regret it?
 
Step backwards to the D90 imho especially if you would like to continue using some nice old glass, if I had any spare cash around I'd rip your arm off, worth buying just to use old glass on.

I'd look at sony too. Compatibility with lots of old minolta lenses including MD with an adaptor. If you can find an A580 then they're a D7000 in a squeaky disguise. Someone was selling one on here with a grip and a few bits for under £500 I think it was. New FF sony due in a few months.

You can also get an adaptor for sony that allows the use of Nikon lenses. I have one. Never tried it. Takes all the ones from the 70s onwards.
 
What kind of lenses are you after? The DA* have all non pentax alternatives that you can use from Sigma/Tamron . Equivalent fast zooms on Canon/Nikon are just as pricey if not more so than Pentax I think.
 
I haven't looked at used D90 prices recently, but (assuming video isn't a must) wouldn't a D300 be a better bet? The D90 feels like a toy compared to that...

That's what I would do aswell, I love my d300.
 
Thanks for all the input, i've decided to stick with the K7 (for a while anyway). Good point that Graham, going from a D200 to a K7, both of which are bombproof would make the D90 feel like a fisher price camera (no offence to D90 owners!)

My main gripe is the lack of fast, affordable primes (old glass aside). And why the heck don't Pentax do a 70-200 2.8? Grrr.....lets see what Photokina brings!

Fair point, though the Tamron 70-200 f2.8 is supposed to be an excellent lens and is "only" £600 at SRS. Apart from Pentax often including weather sealing, I personally don't see the advantage in sticking to them for zooms. I do like their primes though :)
 
It's not really about sticking with Pentax branded lenses Brian, it's about having the option to! Both Nikon and Canon have more affordable versions of fast lenses (85mm 1.8, 35mm 1.8 etc). As of next week though we will FINALLY have a 50mm 1.8 at our disposal, but it better be something spectauclar considering the price (£250!!!)! Don't get me wrong, I love the quality of Pentax lenses, it's just that the choice isn't there.

Same goes for bodies, although the new top of the range DSLR is immenent, it's about time Pentax listened to what their customers have been crying out for and release a FF camera!
