Would the condition put you off!!

"both front and rear glass do not have any big scratches" - translation "the lens glass is scratched" ... if it goes really cheap ok but otherwise, 'you pays yer money and takes yer chance' :D
 
You would expect a 99p starting price!thanks thought I was being a bit snooty *** it wasn't a looker, think I'll give it a wide berth!!
 
The visible condition wouldn't worry me, but I would want to try it out before buying it to check that it was optically perfect. Used 300mm f4 IS is about £700, so as long as you didn't get into a bidding war because £200-250 would be the absolute top money I would pay for it in that condition. 1st manufactured in 1991 so would as for manufacturing code to determine the age. This lens probably won't be supported by canon for servicing if a repair was required.

You pays your money makes your choice
 
The problem is if it looks as rough as that it's obviously had a very hard life and you have to think that one day you might want to sell it on.
It looks like it's been used to clean out a cement mixer. :lol:
 
Yes it would put me off as if it's looking that rough then you've no idea how those dings and dents occurred and god knows how it's really working inside. I'm very protective of my gear and treat all my kit with kid gloves and even though some of it's quite old it's all still looking like new even though it's all been well used. I also don't trust some peoples descriptions on fleabay, they may be happy with what condition they're selling it in but that's the whole point - they want shut of it! Just my opinion though.
 
The lens will likely still work fine, but it's pretty clear it is getting to the end of it's life. Unsupported by Canon

Rubber grips glued on - no problem. The older L series rubber grips were prone to stretch anyway and impact adhesive was the chosen fix method.

Would it put me off? Yes.
I'm not averse to a few scrapes, my 300mm F2.8 is testament to this. But those scrapes are on the bits that would normallyu be in contact with the ground when the lens is put down. The lens in that listing has scrapes in odd places...
 
not for me ..that's just my opinion tho!
as Hadge^ has said he's a bit like myself, i treat my stuff with care as i might want to sell it on in the future...
 
would be worth £200 max but knowing ebay it will go for more
I would not chance it myself would rather pay a bit more and have one that wont stop working just when you need it:)
 
A bottle of tippex would sort the paint on the outside out :D

When I see "glued into place" I would leave it be. Unless you absolutely must have a 300mm right now? I think I'd rather a cheap, but new, 50-250mm or so.

It looks like it's been chucked in a bag with some gravel and took on 5 mile run.
I wouldn't be buying it.
 
The guy says he has it 10 years ... that doesn't explain the condition at all. I've had lenses that were 30 years old and mint.
 
He's bought and sold recently: a canon 70-200, equally trashed.

A GPS and a satellite phone.

North face waterproofs.


He's a press photographer. It will have had a very hard life, but will probably make ok pictures for a cost conscious amateur somewhere. (Better than the kit lens that they could have paid the same price for).

But personally.... Press photographers are number one to not buy from ;)

I've no idea but how much would it cost to have that lens internally cleaned of dust, proper good service and the front/rear lens replaced?
 
Why would you even contemplate paying for all that to be done when the cosmetic condition is that bad? :shrug:
 
If £200 isn't an amount of money that you can write off as a bad purchase if it all goes pear shape I'd pass on it. IMO you'd be better off spending the money on a good condition Sigma 300mm F4 APO, which only works at F4 than that.

He used it daily for over 10 years and is a pro. Did you use your lens daily for 30 years in a professional capacity?

Was after 1 of these but there quite rare! Lost out to one on eBay other day due to a bad reception on my phone! it sold for £150!!

i bought my sig 120-300 from ebay.. the rubberised coating was pretty shot, the front edge of the hood was bare metal where it had been put on the ground etc. so i took a punt without seeing it in the flesh, it was cheap and i was assured that the optics were mint..

the optics were mint. however it transpires that the tripod mount was stripped. also there was a tight spot on the zoom.

sigma replaced the whole tripod collar for free, and the zoom "issue" (didnt effect functionality, it was just annoying) which turned out to be deformed zoom mech from a knock was fixed for what was the standard tarrif at the time £153.

still worked out cheaper than buying an average condition copy :D turned out to be my favourite lens. still sad i sold it :(

but it was inconvinient, hence i say go and check functionality if possible.
 
Still at £200 this morning, with 13 hrs to go...

Does look in a pretty shot condition, but the 70-200 he sold recently, was also shot at and the feedback says it works well - could be worth a punt, but I wouldn't be going too much above the £200 ...

I have had some very good purchases from Ebay, in particular a Gitzo tripod that could have passed as new considerably cheaper though

Just have to be a bit careful and the old adage if it sounds too good to be true it probably is

I mean for glass or bodys, you dont know the true history, stolen ect ect unless recipts are there. Ive had a bad few experiances
 
Well It sold! For a whopping £293 + postage!! That's the bay for u!! It always amazes me!!
 
If eBay didn't exist I wouldn't be able to get into my house past all the stuff I buy and then no longer want!
