Would the Sony 18-200 be a good utility lens to get?

Hi everyone, Merry Christmas !

I got my Sony a77 a few months ago body only and have been using my 50mm and 10-24mm lenses as I mainly just do car photography.

However I want to use the camera more and get into other types of photography and miss the usability of a utility lens.


So with Christmas cash in hand I am looking to get a new lens.

Would the 24-200mm be a good lens to get?

There are a few used on eBay for about £200 and a new one for £320.

Would appreciate some advice before I make a purchase.

Presumably you meant the 18-200 as there is no 24-200?
the 18-200 is an early superzoom design & not that great even on bodies with considerably less than 24MP ...
The 18-250 (or the Tamron that it's optically derived from) is noticeably better. The Sigma 18-250 OS HSM is better still but heavier.
There is also a rumour that Sony is about to introduce an 18-270 (again probably based on the Tamron design).

If you don't need that long a focal length maybe consider the new 18-135mm which seems to get favourable user feedback?
If you don't need the short end consider the 55-200 (you can pick this up as a Tamron from ~£70 & it has absolutely no right to be as good optically as it is for the price ;)).

Of course with all of these you are going to be giving up wide apertures especially at their long ends.
 
Sorry yeah meant the 18-200. Typo :)

Just had a look at the 18-135 and I think it would suit me much better. It would mean I could also use that lens at any car shows I go to.

Will have to have a read and see what reviews it gets.

There are a few new 18-135 lenses on eBay for about £260 so might have to go for that!

I assume the iq would be superior to the 18-200?
