Would this lens fit

Yep on the 550D both EF and EF-S work, its only on the full frames were you can only use EF.
 
It'll definitely fit and will manually focus, but some of the early Sigma lenses don't auto-focus on digital SLR's as some of the internals weren't future proofed for the arrival of DSLR's!! :thumbs:

Sigma don't charge loads for updating a lens, however it is a hassle and expense that means that lens is probably not worth the risk.....those Sigma's aren't very good tbh!! ;)

I have an old Sigma 70-300mm lens which I gather needs ‘re-chipping’ to work on my new Canon digital SLR. Can this be done?

The majority of lenses we can rechip. However there are a few older lenses which we are unable to re-chip due to parts no longer being available. In order to answer your question, we need to determine which 70-300mm lens you have. If you look at the lens, is the Macro switch held on by two screws? Or does it state 'Super' on the unit?

as said some early 1s may not auto focus but it will fit and well worth a punt there not a wow lens but there ok i own and use a apo 70-300 ,and the price they go for 2nd hand there well worth a look, here is a photo taken at 300mm on a cold foggy day at 1600 iso

Sorry didn't realise it was a film lens when I replied - probably not worth it.

Get a canon 55-250 IS instead, more money obviously but a good budget lens for that range.
 
Well it's arrived, very good condition etc. One major problem though...

Autofocus works fine however after taking a picture the camera errors ERR 01

I've spoken to Sigma and it's too old to be chipped, but the guy said it would be fine if the aperture is fully open (it's an aperture controlling problem) - haven't got this to work yet.
So I have a lens that will take one picture then errors, fine again if the camera is turned off and back on.
So much for trying to save a few pennies :( You were right slimbert.
