Would this tripod support 10kg?

Hi

I'm looking for a tripod and head which will be able to hold roughly 10kg so I can build a crane for it. Will be roughly 10kg including my camera, and counter weights.

This is what I'm looking at: http://www.creativevideo.co.uk/index.php?t=product/manfrotto_mvk502am

The legs support 15kg but the head only supports 4kg. As far as I'm aware the Manfrotto 502 is a decent enough head, how do people get around using cranes without blowing serious money on a head which can handle 10kg?

Or will the 502 be fine despite Manfrotto giving it a 4kg load.

Cheers.

No.

I haven't *used* that tripod, but I've played with it several times now, and always felt that it felt a bit flimsy tbh...

your best bet might well be one of the hench old manfrotto's - try ebay for one that someone's back can't manage carrying any more?

Hmm, it does say that the tripod can handle 15kg though, the weak point in my mind was that the head can only handle 4kg?

if it says 4kg then look at the combined weight of your camera and lens you wou use if its under you should be OK

But to be honest Id get a Manfrotto 055 http://tinyurl.com/cpvebx4 and a Manfrotto 496RC2 Compact Ball Head http://tinyurl.com/cc9vyq6 strong enough to use a gimbal a 500mm and camera less than £160 next day delivery (y)

I'm looking more for a video setup. Hence needing 10kg loading weight as I'll eventually want a setup like this:

I've loaded up tripod heads with well over twice the advertised maximum weight. None of them collapsed or anything dramatic.

I'm guessing serious overloading is going to wear out certain parts much faster and possibly screw up the head's precision.

For my crane I used a pretty manky Manfrotto 128LP that I got for £26. I chose this because it doesn't have a quick release plate, the head has a cast slot that you bolt the crane directly into to minimize flex.

Legs are an old pair of Manfrotto 055s.

My all up weight is about 7 kilos and it's working absolutely fine.

You should be able to get both second hand for less than £100. It might be worth experimenting with that. If it doesn't feel strong enough for you then just flog them on and try again.

manfrotto 055 would be perfect so why do you want a head for it, isnt that some sort of head/dolly combined have you a link to the dolly

EDIT Ooops, so you want panning head so you can attach the dolly

I do not believe the risk is collapse, it is more about performance. If you exceed the rated weight the camera will be more likely to vibrate. This is particularly true for video where smooth action is required for a professional look.

Ben I have a Vinten Vision Blue tripod and head that is like the Manforotto but much more sturdy imo. I'm thinking of selling it so drop me a pm if it's of any interest to you.
