Would you 2 x a 70-200 is mk2, or go 400 F5.6?

OK, so I have a Sigma 150-500 and 70-200 F2.8L IS MK2 for my longer lens choices, and I will be going to an air-show next month, and want to get in amongst the action.
The Sigma is heavy, and I'm not too sure I want to lug it round all day, so the question is, should I get a 2 x MK111 to pop onto the 70-200, or maybe get a 400 F5.6L.
I have the 7D and 5D MK3, and was intending on using the 7D to gain the crop.

Any thoughts on what would work best for an air-show, and give me the sharpest results?

Any thoughts much appreciated......
 
I've got a 2x MKIII extender and it works really well with the 70-200mm MKII... You'll gain the IS with that combination but lose a little IQ compared to the 400mm prime. There's not much in it though. :)

Don't bother with anything less than the MKIII converter though... The MKI and II are nowhere near as good (although the 1.4x MKII is awesome). :D
 
Thanks for that, do you know if you are restricted to centre af point only when using the 2 x?
 
I've not checked to be honest... I'll have a look for you in a bit and let you know but if memory serves, I think it worked fine wherever the AF was set. :)
 
I use a 2x MkIII converter with my 70-200 f2.8L MkII and even wide open at f5.6 I find the IQ as good as the 100-400 L I used to have. I've not had a 400 prime but I have seen lots of photos taken with the lens and they might be a bit sharper than the 70-200 and 2x but the versatility of the 70-200 an 2x is, for me at least, more important.

I shoot wildlife with my setup and by f7.1-8 the IQ is excellent, I've also used it for zoo trips where 400mm, even on full frame, is far too long for some of the animals but with a 140-400mm you can catch them perfectly.
