Yes
I am looking for a camera to use in preference to my 400d, especially as I have started photographing for a non league football club and should also start photographing rugby too.

However I am only a student and studying photography so funds are limited especially as I have recently bought a eos 5 and 3 film camera, a 50mm 1.8 II and a sigma 70-200 2.8.

My funds will stretch to a Mark 1 as these are going between 300-400 on fleabay amogst other places wheras a mark II are fetching 800-900 although I would prefer one of these.

A pro body, even the 4mp 1D MK1, will be excellent for outdoor sports, a weatherproof body, 8 fps, 45 AF-point all help this process.

The downside is that 4MP is a tad restrictive nowadays, and in the 1D MK1 there are noise problems at higher ISO.

I think I'd be tempted to soldier on with your 400d until you can afford a 1D MKII.

Also, it's rumoured that a 1D MKIV may be out this year-if so it could depress the MKII prices ?

I've seen some 1DIIs at Jacobs in Cardiff for £600 (well used). 400D and film cameras might cost similar.

I'd never buy 1D classic as they are at the end of their life and image quality is far worse than from 10D (google it). I am waiting for the 1DIV so I could pick up 1D2N or even mk3 "cheaply".

400D is not that horrible for sports, I've shot a couple local matches with one and a sigma 70-300 APO 3 years ago. The results were acceptable from the technical point of view. The important thing is to stand at the right place, know your gear, and shoot onwhen you need to (400D is only rated to 50k clicks)

I've got a 1D Mk1, the focusing is excellent and you get 8 fps. 4 MP is ok as long as you don't have to crop to much. I paid £300 for mine with a charger and 2 batteries. It is a excellent camera for that money.
