Would you buy from Gumtree?

I have found one or two cameras on Gumtree, some seem a fairly good deal, others seem to be way overpriced.

Anyway, to the point, would you have the courage to buy from Gumtree? Or is it dodgy territory??
 
I would only buy if it's a cash in hand transaction and you get to see the gear in person. I once fell for a scam by dodgy dealers on GT. Paid with credit card so managed to cancel and get my money back. Ahh... to be young and gullible again! :)

No different than eBay in my opinion....take the same precautions and all should be fine..:thumbs:

I have purchased items from Gumtree with no problem and most people prefer to do a F to F transaction from what i have seen which makes things simple.

Seen something in Sheffield though, bit too far to travel!

I couldn't risk Paypal I don't think!
 
Just remember if it's a cash deal then do it in an open public place. Some people will rob you for a couple of hundred quid.
 
i have had good experiences on gumtree but there always looks like deals that are far too good to be true. I would be less likely to buy something without collecting in person on gumtree

I've looked a couple of time just out of interest and the prices I saw were waaaay OTT.

I have contacted this person, the email I got back was fairly shifty I think. I sent an email asking for pictures of the camera etc. Then got this back..

I'm with my work in Scotland, I have the item here with me. I would like to close this transaction through Paysafecard(available from local store near you because I don't like online payments) the delivery will be next day and I will pay the postal charges.
The transaction will be cash on delivery, let me know if you're interested to use this service.
You will have the opportunity to try the item before pay it.

yeah erm right ... i'd give this the swerve if i were you. As others have said i'd only ever close a GT transaction face to face with cash , in a public place

If they are looking to do a scam, surely they should learn to type correctly..?

I have sold a few things on gumtree with no problems at all & bought maybe once i think which was only a small item.
But i would not sell anything unless it was cash on collection & if you were going to buy something of value with cash i would take someone with you just as a backup.:thumbs:
 
Bought/sold on Gumtree countless times. Use some common sense, if they don't want to meet face to face, cash in hand, it's an absolute no-no. No exceptions.

And being able to inspect is a great advantage, especially for photography stuff it can be a great way to discern condition/functionality in a way that even high quality product pictures cannot tell you.
 
I bought my Canon 5d classic and 17-40mm f4 L on gumtree at different times. Bought face to face, got to give them a good once over before I parted with the readies. Got a very good deal both times. No complaints. I've also sold gear on GT as well, you can take a bit less than selling on eBay as there are none of the (ridiculously) high eBay fees to worry about.
 
I only ever buy face to face on gumtree. You only have to a search for high end gear to realise that it is about 50% scammers on there.

People slate ebay and indeed I've had my gripes with it in the past but at least there is a feedback system and a modicum of buyer protection should things go pear shaped.
