would you buy Sigma via mail order

On the various forums Sigma lens seem to have a quality control problem and it seems to be hit and miss, I can get a couple of lenses via the tesco deal at half price, but wonder is it worth the gamble

I take general shots, family etc, like landscape, city scape and am thinking about trying a prime or two as I have the kit lens 17-85 on a 50d and some old canon zoom lenes.
Is the reliability of quality better on either of these

sigma 30mm F1.4

I too have read of Sigma quality control problems. However, you'll no hassle with Tesco if you have to send the lenses back so there is not much risk financially.

i would, but then im 5 out of 5 for good copies (some new some 2nd hand)..

I have bought Sigma, Tamron and Canon lenses by phone and internet (getting the best deal and saving money) and have had no issues. As long as you buy from a reputable company you should have no problems. Even if you buy in person from a high street store the lens has still been shipped so I see little if any difference. Just always buy off a good company and all should be ok.

No reason not too. If you get a duff one from a bricks and mortar shop you still have to take it back there. I am currently in that position with my 30mm f1.4, although need to decide whether it is user error at the wide open end, which quite frankly seems the most likely cause for the very soft piccies!
