would you sell all your (limited) kit to go full frame with 1 lens?

Ive hankered after a D700 for a long time now and as their second hand price seems to have come down a bit it seems a bit more achievable to buy one. However to do so (im back at uni) Id need to sell my fuji s5, 35mm f2, 85mm f1.8 and bronica Sq-Am effectively id be left with just the d700 and a 50mm f1.4. Its a pretty hypothetical question as tbh i havent been using my camera much since starting uni again and it makes more sense for me to have 'bits' i can sell off if the financial need arise but im still interested to see what folks think if they were in similar position ie selling all their kit and having just a full frame and a fifty lens for the very foreseeable future
 
TBH if you haven't used the kit you have what makes you think another body and just 1 lens will make you do more photography?

I'd save/work to get the D700.
 
Depends what you photograph? A 50mm is limited.

For me personally, wouldn't give up the 1D, 300mm f2.8 and several other lenses to go full frame as I mainly shoot aviation and motorsport.

But if your photography lends itself to this set up until finances allow additional lenses then I don't see why not. Its your choice and money at the end of the day.
 
cant save or work, started studying medicine 8 weeks ago and have hardly any free time. Im not asking if it'll make me take more photos im asking if people would make the change, I have been using my bronica but its a much slower process and i cant lob it in a bag as i would my DSLR. The other factor is whereas i normally hassle friends and family by always snapping away ive only known this lot for a few weeks, dont worry the camera will be back with a vengeance and buying another camera isnt meant as a stimulus to this end.

EDIT: 50mm is pretty much my default (well 35mm on the s5) so itd be very useful but still limiting

I guess its down to the old question off "do you actually need it". If your not using your camera now, I wouldn't see the point because the d700 will prob end up as a very expensive paper weight :P

Having said that you can always easily sell it on... :D

Personally, I would take the D700 hehe, but that's because I wouldn't mind one anyway, and I don't like film :D
 
ok ok maybe the not using thing is tilting things a bit too much, not using my camera is down to a few factors and for arguments sake lets say its a temporary issue and get to the nitty gritty-dx body and a few lenses plus a medium format film camera OR an FX body with a 50mm f1.4?

fwiw its mostly portrait/candid people shots im into and the depth of field, great ability at high ISO and frankly overall loveliness of stuff the D700 produces* that draw me to it

*yes its the photographer but even when i was using my friends my photos had a bit more zing to them when using a f1.4 wide open

EDIT: flickr is a pretty good representation of my lack of abilities and subject matter

I went full frame with Nikon and relied on a single 24-70 for general assignments.

Admittedly I have some extremely generous and supportive mates who'd kindly borrowed me lenses for work but going on your needs though, I'd agree that the idea of a D700 with just a 50mm is a very capable set up initially. Unless you have to rely on more focal length then I say go for it.
A 35mm f/2 is very fair in price too ;)
 
i think the biggest thing holding me back is how much ive enjoyed using my bronica with a metered prism, anyway more opinions always welcome

yes.

i do still keep a few film cameras around (including MF) & enjoy using them, but I find that when time is tight (as it may well be for you at Uni) the time & hassle of film processing makes me use that kit relatively little.

the d700 + 50mm 1.4 is great for available light/candid shooting.
