Had no idea where to put this one, so went for equipment :D
This (IMO) is incredible.
The video is of a Canon 5D full shutter activation sequence in (apparently) 2000fps.

Does beg the question though, the mirror appears to settle and steady for some time before the first curtain drops, so, is mirror lockup really required?

Also, i assume the curtains return to their original position after the mirror drops back down??

The mirror slap can cause the camera to vibrate (oscillating decaying motion?) for about 1-2s. So effectively if the exposure times are comparable, then mirror lock up really helps in practice. It is particularly obvious with 1D and longer lenses. The 1DIII silent mode (very gentle and timed mirror lift up before exposing) works almost like an IS, and the results speak for themselves.

The 2000fps camera is really something I want to play with!
 
Ah I see. That makes sense. The mirrors motion is a lot more bouncy than i thought it would be.
 
+1 for the mirror being more bouncy than I thought it would be. I take it with the 1Dx that the mirror is motorised in both ways to get fps. That's some incredible piece of engineering, imagine that going 12 times a second. Not quite as good as the 2000 fps of the camera that took it though.

Good point, so I assume the mirror is pushed back down, as it couldn't fall back down quick enough...could it?
 
Nikon V1 shoots at 1200fps. Been using it to video my 5D2, and also a flash gun firing in master mode - count all those the flashes going out!

Mirror-lock up doesn't really give much benefit over about 1/2sec - the critical speeds are around 1/8sec and 1/15sec.

The new Canon 1Dx gets a lot of its speed by positively driving the mirror both up and down, instead of just against a bouncy spring. Nikon D4 is similar.
