Wrapping lenses

Quick question.

What do you do with your lenses in terms of protection whilst they are not in use? I would normally have them in the camera bag, but my Crumpler 5500 only holds so much kit and I don't always want to carry round my LowePro Mini Trekker (ruck sack).

I have been using well washed (then well dried) car chamois leathers to wrap the individual lenses in.

Is this a good idea?
 
ive got a chest of drawers fitted out with flight case foam for mine - but thers no real problem i can see with yours other than that is you incautiously pick a cloth up by one end and it unrolls dropping the lens on the floor
 
I have a glass cupboard where I store stuff to keep the dust off. It's in a normally heated/ventilated lived-in room and not in the dark which is a possible breeding ground for fungus. Apart from that I don't do anything.
 
I have 2 bags - a shoulder bag and a Lowe Pro backpack fitted with Domke inserts - so i store things in the backpack and carry the shoulder bag with me (or vice versatile of need arises). I rarely carry everything anyway so this suits me
