Hi all, I have broken my scaphoid (part where thumb joins wrist) and am currently in a splint. Does anyone have any recommendations for wrist/hand supports that they have actively used whilst taking photos. I have a few photography jobs this week and need to be able to do them. Any tips/advice would be welcome. I have looked for sports ones but cant find anything with positive reviews.
Thanks
Nicola

I have arthritis in my right wrist. I don't need anything for photos but I do use the longsdale one for vaccing at work, I valet cars. It does help but if too tight can make you thumb go numb. But for around a fiver from intersport it might be worth a punt. On the PC I sometimes just use tubigrip because its not bulky. Its surprising how much support that gives and you can always make it 4 layers thick. Good luck

Go very careful you don't do any further damage :( I'm in a similar situation having just had a shattered elbow repaired and not able
to carry or hold the camera atm.
What sort of photography are you doing, today I took the camera out and did get a few pictures using a monopod to support the weight

I am aware that i need to be very careful. I did somethng similar on my left wrist last august, but didnt have photography shoots scheduled so planned accordingly. This time I have promotional shoot on Thurs which is at an event. Then Sat & Sunday i have two gigs and motorsport in day so none of it is using tripods as moving constantly. I am aiming to keep it in splint until Thurs and then for the 3 hours at the event have it in a diff support which enables me to use it more. Same for weekend.

Gremlin - how was your arm feeling after today?

get a monopod, theres a few with little feet at the bottom, thatll help. there are some grips and handstraps you could get too, maybe get a couple of different designs ?

Not to bad thanks Nicola, but then I was very cautious, if I damage the repair then I'm in big trouble.
I did a shoot at a local horse event last weekend before I had the op, took nearly 600 pics using a 70/200 2.8 lens which is
quite heavy, it was ok after that too but then I have been told I have a very high pain tolerence

i find the 70-200 2.8 far too heavy with a fully functioning wrist! I will be using my 24-70 2.8 for my event/gig stuff and that witht eh 6d is not too heavy. I will see how i feel on wednesday beforehand.

Nicola,
I have quite severe arthritis in my wrists and fingers, but I find using my monopod fully "squeezed up" as a handle in my left hand (I am right handed) attached to my 70-200 via a ballhead to achieve a comfortable angle, a good way of minimizing discomfort for long shoots.

I know a couple of accident prone people like yourself:p

They get braces etc from here. Seem to do the job- allowed my friend to ski with knee brace. I've got an elbow one which is fine although actually the answer was to stop not pretend the injury wasn't there:(

I'd be inclined to just use the wraps that boxers use and really strap it up- without leaving yourself in agony. I would also start working out how to hold the camera in the left hand so your right is not having to do much other than press the shutter. Takes a bit to get used to but can hold it with the left and zoom with right or can hold and zoom with left only although that does depend more on hand size- granted I probably win that one:D

Bit of practice and some captains of crush action and your right hand will think it's on holiday:)

Cheers all, the physioroom was where i was looking to buy from and i did think of the boxing tape as well!! I will update you with how it goes, hoping to not over use it this week and where possible my colleague will do the shoots, but Thursday is one i def have to do so we shall see. :)

I ended up with this and used it both at the promotional event Thursday and at Brands Hatch for the bikes. It was comfortable and supportive. I am now resting for the week and having another xray, hoping the xray confirms that it isnt actually broken but otherwise i will know if i have to stop for a few more weeks. Fingers crossed. Thanks for your help!

(y) Glad it worked out. Hope the bones do too:)

Hi

PLEASE take it easy with the Scaphoid fracture (is it confirmed or suspected?). The scaphoid is a nasty bone to break and because it doesn't have a great blood supply, can lead to horrible long term problems that will impede your photography more in the long term especially if it was your dominant hand(arthritis/avascular necrosis/non union around the fracture site).

Ok. Responsible bit done!

Hope the X-ray is better, and more importantly you feel better.

S
