x and y resolution

Hello

I seem to have a x and y resolution of 72 dpi straight from my 5D classic and my questions are:

1. is that set in stone or can I adjust it up or down?

2. can you only adjust it in PP and if so what benefits are there to doing so?

3. what would be the ideal dpi settings for various scenarios?

Sorry if these seem really obvious but it is something i'm not too hot on..

It doesn't matter. The DPI setting within an image file doesn't really mean anything or do anything.
 
Does it really matter anyway? Wouldn't people be better off improving their picture-taking techniques instead of worrying about stuff like this?
I pay (well sometimes I pay...) for a good camera so that I don't have to worry about the technical side of things - I just concentrate on a good capture and good composition instead...

Worry about composition; about capturing the moment; about getting the subject's expression just right...don't worry about this kind of crap...
 
dpi doesn't exist, it's a concept made up by printers to confuse the unwary :D


Your camera gives you a set number of pixels, what you do with them is up to you ;)

:lol: thats a bit random! I asked a specific question about resolution settings and give me that answer... By that response am I too assume you only use auto on your camera? Or is it a particular dig at some of my work?

...and why would you infer any of that from my response?

No, I shoot manual all the time.

I spend about two hours with a new camera setting up the various functions in the cusom menu section, then never go there again.

I just think people here in general go on a bit too much about the various technical aspects of the equipment and spend too little time concentrating on what really matters - the end result.


Your camera will resolve what it resolves - just select the highest quality settings and get on with taking photos...
If it's not enough, then you (we, they, everyone) goes and buys a better camera...

It only matters when you print. If you don't print your stuff, forget it exists. If you do, then speak to your printer beforehand as different machines and different print sizes require specific file preparations.

Thanks I am looking to start printing some of my photo's as the missus is a bit perplexed that I have spent all this money and not one of my own photo's graces any of or walls!
 
My response was meant to be tongue in cheek.

To be clear I have owned my camera for just over 7 months and did not read the manual at all I just went straight out shooting to get to grips with it. I too went through the menus and dialled everything up to it's maximum quality setting. When ever I do not manage to get the desired effect or photo I'm after I try to find out why and learn from it so that I know in the future how to combat said problem. That is when asking such questions helps me/others to build on what they already know.

And I also agree more time should be spent out and about taking pictures than talking about it but sometimes you just don't have the energy or time to get out there so this is the next best thing..
 
glorious sunshine here, but I have two lads to feed and water and a whole load of crappy housey stuff to do:gag:. before the missus gets home tomorrow...as the three of us have trashed the house. :lol:
