Are the convertors any good that go between the camera and the lens or would it be a waste of money. Thing is I've just came in from shooting some birds of prey but was all too far away even with my 300mm lens so was thinking of getting one of the convertors

teleconverters are mean't to be used with prime lens',but can be used with zoom lens..but depending on your aperture,this will double if using a 2X T/C,so if your aperture @ 300mm is f5.6,then it will be f/11 with a 2X attached.another problem is that you will lose AF capability once you go past f/8,so you'll only be able to manual focus,plus image quality will be drastically reduced[i'm assuming you're using something like a 70-300 4-5.6 lens].having said that,it might be worth posting this in the sony alpha thread where someone with more experience can offer better advice on this matter :thumbs:
 
2x converters on zoom lenses are usually pretty bad.

For starters you will loose two stops of light, so your max of F5.6 becomes F11 (bad for winter...) and also there will be a significant impact on AF performance.

I'd invest in a hide and get closer to your subjects... 300mm while not plenty should be enough.
 
Sony's own teleconverters (and the Minolta ones that preceeded them) only work on a very small number of lenses - see here http://www.mhohner.de/sony-minolta/lenses.php#tcs

So you would need to get a third party item to work with most lenses. There's a good chance the autofocus will be poor or not work at all, as others have noted and image quality may be affected.

Teleconverters actually work MUCH better with quality prime lenses than zoom lenses, which tend to be slower. I would recommend in this case the Kenko 1.4x teleconverter which will not decrease performance too much if used with a decent prime lens. Not sure I'd try it with a zoom unless it's fast (f4 or faster constant) or you don't mind losing AF.

thats what i was saying if you read my statement again ;)

i use a sony 1.4X with my sony 70-200 2.8G lens,with virtually no affect on AF speed or image quality...
 
Ok cheers all for you replies. I best give the convertors a miss then and save my money instead for better lenses
