Xmas gift A3 Photo Printer Budget £500 - help me choose.

I guess this is the correct forum, xmas list forums don't appear here :)

Actually the printer is going to be for me but my wife has given me an allowance.


Basically, whilst hoping to avoid the All-in-one route, i want to buy a photo printer to replace my HP photosmart 7760.

I have a limit of around £500 (but that is mildly flexible).


I don't much care if it is Wireless or not as i prefer to check the prints as they come out anyway, not batch-printing.

I need to print at sizes of at least A3 - and a roller system for continuous (panorama??) is a bonus.


I am running Win XP - use CS4 to polish shots from my Canon 40D - usually I print to Ilford galerie pearl but I would prefer opportunity to try other types of art paper.

I have calibrated my monitor too.

any recommendations?
I am reading a few good reviews of the HP B8850 - which has a built in calibrator too.

running costs/ink purging etc...

The HP is very slow though..!

75 seconds for a 6x4...

I have just got a R2880 which get raved over so ihope it is as good as people say it is... You can get then for £519 from both Amazon and eBuyer.

But they do have small cartridges so not sure about running costs, the HP ones have bigger inks but the speed put me off massively.

I didn't buy an A3+ printer to print 6x4:)

of course, most times I would be using it for 7*5 for general photos (yes, the A3 printer is overkill but ...lust is lust...)

I would want to print A3 and 44" panoramas, in fact got a nice image ready for panorama already...

running costs, reliability...?
is the epson 1900 at least as good?
is there any one printer that would be most likely to fit the bill?
 
epson r2880 - really good quality .got mine in january 09, £400.00 on 12 month credit from Dixons online .they may be doing deals this jan if you can hang on.
 
which of the printers allows for larger (44" long at least) panorama's?
i think the epsons are limited to about 19" long, apart from the even more expensive ones for around £800+.

The R2400/2880 comes with a roll attachment and will actually do as long as you want so could print banners.
 
Have you considered the cost of printing panoramas, you can get a lot of prints made online for £500 + consumables , I know it's convenient to press a button and have it appear but are you really going to print that many panoramas and A3 prints.
 
well, i know the prints vs costs, etc...
but there's something about having your own printer for it...
i currently have the HP 7960 and was pretty happy with it...as my wife's offered to get me a larger printer for xmas...and I have a few shots i'd like to do (and as i am living in spain just now and will be here for next couple of years) i will likely be using the larger prints to decorate the flat...

i don't imagine for a moment I would get particular cost benefit out of it...
aren't christmas gifts great :)
 
cowalski - i am shortlisting the 2880 along with the B8850 - i think there was one more to look at but i cannot remember which one it is.
