Hi guys,

Any one know if xp pro can view the media library on a remote computer?

Also can Linux, or is there a similar service (most likely would try ubuntu as I use it elsewhere)? Guessing I'll need to use a different library streaming service as the odds of linux and windows sharing media like good kids are tiny :D

I have a battered lappy that is becoming a media server streaming .avi's from a desktop to a tv downstairs.

Lappy is a Vaio TX1 and has an 'interesting' networking issue, wired is fine wireless works and talks to the AP fine but won't actually talk to any network machine or router (via IP or name) or to the internet. Though it canget an SSID and knows the diff between right and wrong network key.

cheers for any help

WMP only shares music and pictures. For videos, Windows XP Media Centre Edition or Windows Vista can do it.

You can try running a DLNA setup then using something such as Twonky Media as a server.

As for Linux, not too sure about servers. Ill have to try and see what I can find tonight.

WMP will share videos....I don't use it now, but I did for a while use the WMP uPnP server to stream videos to my Xbox 360, works fine :)

Really? :O I didnt know that, will have to give that a try tonight. Oh no sorry, I just remembered.

hmm issue I have is lappy won't see any shared media thought it might be functionality stripped from pro - might shove a copy of seven on it as it needs a reinstall anyway.

stupid sony its a lovely feeling machine and its gorgeous to look at but its allways been a PITA to network where other machines just work
