Going to make the jump to Windows 7 before the support dries up.

XP pro to Windows 7 pro

Is there anything particular I should look out for?

I've run the compatibility test and, that all looks ok.

Any other pointers appreciated.

Thanks

No. As Nike would say, just do it....

should be good, if you can do a backup and clean install rather than an upgrade. bit tidier for your system.

+1. I'd always do a backup and clean install. The upgrade route works but clean install just avoids all sorts of potential problems and troubleshooting.

+1 as suggested above.

Thanks guys,

I was under the impression it had to be a clean install from XP anyway, not that I was going to do it any other way.

You'll probably hate the look to begin with but w7 is very customisable. I've only found one piece of older software that isn't really compatible with w7 (picture publisher 10) but generally installs have been very painless.

First things to do with Windows 7 (unless you like giant icons or need them big)....

right click on desktop > View> Small Icons (you sometimes have to adjust icon spacing afterwards)

right click on taskbar > properties > tick use small icons. (don't close, keep reading)

Then change to start menu tab and click customise. Change the items under Start menu size to 30 in each. Then scroll down in the window and find use large icons and untick.

I hated the large icons on Vista and 7

I don't like any icons on the desktop and always hide them, is this also possible with 7 ?

Yes, so long as you are prepared for revenge of the giant recycle bin in your sleep.

Well, I changed to 7 yesterday and, apart from the time it took to back up and restore using Windows easy backup, it went pretty well.

Went to 64bit as well.

Don't know why I was so worried but, it's easy to say that now

Thanks for the advice guys.
