Has anyone used a Carl Zeiss 28mm f2.8 in Y/C mount on Canon 5D? is there any issue on the reflective mirror? i have heard some MF wide-angle lenses could block the reflective mirror on a FF camera.
Is this the Carl Zeiss Distagon 28/2.8?
If so, I've had an AE and MM version and they've both worked at infinity provided you use a very good quality adapter. Most are a touch too thin, which causes the 5D's mirror to hit something on the back of the lens.
I ended up buying a rather nice adapter from this chap: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Adapter-Fits-...hotography_OtherAccess_RL&hash=item5d2db54317
Expensive, but very much worth it![]()
A bad quality adapter will be too thin = back of lens will hit the mirror, as it will be closer than it should be.
OK, but WHY? Whats so special about this lens? And how will you control the aperture? Surly the lens doesn't have electric motors like a Canon lens and if it does, do the contacts line up? Are the control commands the same? With a mount converter in between, theres more surfaces to be misaligned, let the dirt and light in. Seems an awful lot of trouble to go to, just because you can. I'm missing some thing here but what?
The lens is completely manual, so you are correct. Adapting lenses is no hassle however, and Carl Zeiss lenses have a certain something which needs to be seen to be appreciated. Most are pin Sharp corner to corner for landscapes and render an incredible image, usually with a hint of 3d. I've sold nearly all my Canon lenses now as, to me, the images produced are dull and flat.
I have tried a couple of screw mount Zeiss lenses on my Pentax DSLR, the result just blew me away. i do not think the sharpness is a lot better than other MF lens e.g. Pentax Takumar etc., but the color rendering and flavour are very pleasant to me. Zeiss lenses in Y/C mount should be the best range in the Zeiss family, but it's annoying that there is no adaptor for PENTAX DSLR, and no FF DSLR from PENTAX. it's the major driver for me to get a 2nd hand Canon 5d.
And we shouldn't forget the the CZJ lenses didn't have the quality control or the availability of raw materials of that of the West German models. Interestingly though, I believe the Carl Zeiss Jena 135/3.5 model is actually better than the Zeiss 135/2.8, and all CJZ lenses render images very, very nicely indeed Yes, it's frustrating for Pentax owners, I agree. Sony owners fare a little better as the MM lenses can have the mounts replaced with custom Sony Alpha ones.
My experience is that the Contax lenses are a lot, lot sharper than the East German Carl Zeiss Jena lenses. However, they are a lot, lot more expensive! And we shouldn't forget the the CZJ lenses didn't have the quality control or the availability of raw materials of that of the West German models. it's good to know that, so CZJ 135/3.5 should be a keeper. i have also got a CZ 35/2.4. it's very nice, but i found the bokh can be a little bit noisy. i think it might be a comprise with the close capability. in your opinon, what could be a good alternative in Y/C zeiss range?
Thanks
Sorry, the aperture is set on the lens...it's manual stopdown only (the adapter closes the blades are you turn the aperture ring).
