Yashica Mat question

Yes
Hi, I've just bought my first TLR, a Yashica Mat from the famous auction site. It arrived this morning so I'm trying to make sure everything works ok, but from what I can see, the shutter seems jammed. I can see the blades of the shutter at all times behind the taking lens. Also, the shutter release either does nothing or it makes a noise like the timer is set then nothing happens. Am I correct to assume it's jammed? If so, can anyone recommend a good place to get it serviced, preferably in Sussex or nearby?
Cheers!

Edit: Just noticed the M/X/V selector is stuck at V - another indication of a stuck shutter?

HMM not sure.

I know that you are not meant to have the selector set to 'M' and use the self timer as that will jam the system up.

Just checked on mine and you can see the shutter blades behind the taking lens.

However with these cameras you wind the crank until it goes no further, then wind it back to charge the shutter, which should then, when you release the shutter when you hit the button.

Don't know anywhere in Sussex to service it but do know of a place in Liverpool that I sent my 124G to be fixed.

If you take it into Clocktower Cameras in Brighton, they should be able to fix it or get their 'handyman' to. I recently took my ETRS speedgrip in there--it was missing 2 screws I could not find anywhere--and they were really helpful. Cost me £2 as well but obviously that's a much smaller job.

If you want the camera to recieve a full do-over google Mark Hama, he specialises in CLAs for Yashica TLRs and is highly praised for it.

Thanks for the replies, all very helpful. Knikki, I had not realised that I needed to wind the crank back to cock the shutter, I thought this happened when you wound the shutter on. Anyhow, I now have a working Yashica Mat (pending running a film through it!).
Cheers,
Tenubracon
