Hi Guys,

Got my first gig coming up. Photographing a band called Canterbury at the 02 Academy in Oxford, and am looking at lenses (yes that joyus topic that involves money money!).

Now I am looking at potentially buying a lens before then, and renting another, and would just like your opinions on whether it is a good choice or not.

Now the two cameras that I have are a 1D MK III and a 40D so her are the options that I was thinking:-

Buy a 50mm 1.4, mount that on one body and have the 70-200mm on other body

or

Buy a 50mm 1.4, mount that on one body, and hire a wider angled lens to mount on the other.

What do you think would be the ideal lens to hire/buy considering the cameras that I will be using.

As always, help will be much appreciated :)

50 1.8 is a hell of a lot cheaper... £75 from kerso iirc...

O2 academy's well sized, should have decent lighting, it's hardly some small pub in the arse end of nowhere... :) You shouldn't even need to be resorting to f1.8 really in a venue like that :)

I'd get something wider than 50mm, wide on one body, long on the other. Put the tele on whatever's got the better high iso performance.

I should be able to borrow a 24-70 2.8, so that should cover that base i suppose :)

24-70 all the way.
70-200 is often way to long, 50mm is also too long sometimes. I think 90% of my live gig stuff has been done on a 24-70.

Although shots like this would have been impossible without the 70-200, but I was at the side of stage rather than front

Another suggestion is the 85mm f/1.8. Came in pretty handy too.
