Yet another damn lens question

I thought I had decided what lens I was going to buy to add to my 550D and the 15-85mm. I had decided on the Canon 100-400L but am having second thoughts, mainly because of the maximum apature. My budget is around the £1200 mark.

I'm a bit of a photograph anything person, from sports to wildlife. I have been/will be photographing football, rugby, hockey, motor sports etc to birds of all shapes and sizes and any other wildlife I stumble upon - fox, deer etc.

Of the pictures I've taken lately most have been towards the end of my 100-300 5.6 lens, but I have struggled with the light and consequently low shutter speeds.

So I've been thinking along the lines of a Sigma 70-200 F2.8 + the Sigma 150-500 which stretches my my budget a touch, but I'm concerned about the image quanlity - my original reason for getting the 100-400L.

Are there any other options - maybe the Canon 70-200 F4 and the longer Sigma. Or maybe the Sigma 100-300 F4. Or should I risk a second hand Canon 70-200 F2.8L along with the long Sigma.

Too many choices and I don't want to make an expensive mistake.

Thanks in advance.

If you already have the 15-85 range covered then the Sigma 150-500 is a good choice for birds and easily matches the Canon 100-400 for IQ. Since you mention the 70-200 f2.8 I assume you also want some fast glass for gloomy situations. So it is in that area you perhaps need to think of maybe a prime fast lens, having covered the other ranges with your 15-85 and the Sigma 150-500, a combination that I have.

I bought the Canon 70-200 F4 and I'm well impressed ;)

Doesn't stop me wanting the 2.8 IS though

Well after much deliberation I've gone and bought the Canon 100-400 IS L

It came down to reach at the end of the day combined with image quality. I read a number of reviews and the 100-400 came out the best in terms of IQ by quite some way. Got a good deal in the end from my local camera shop and got it there and then. Paid about £30 more than at Camera World, but then I've got it in my paws now.

Looking forward to playing with it now :D

enjoy it mate it is a cracking lens
