When we were in S.Africa recently I realised that virtually all my shots were at the long end of my 100-400L. Although I did get some decent shots I felt that most of them were not as sharp as I would have liked.

I decided today to do some research on Canon long primes and the one that came up as very good value was the 300L f4L non IS. Rarer than rocking horse doodoo it seems but I saw one on ebay on a buy-it now or make an offer.

I took 10% off the asking price after checking on the age of the lens and it was accepted. Part of me wanted the offer rejected but on the whole I'm pleased it's coming.

I'm a little concerned about the lack of IS but as I shall be using it mostly supported with a 1.4X TC I don't think it will be a problem.

Must stop buying glass!

I'd be interested to hear your views on it, as I'm looking at that or the 300mm f2.8 IS - not that I'll EVER be able to afford the f2.8, but that's what dreams are for. :'( :D

It's a great lens, congrats! I coupled mine with a Kenko DGX Pro 1.4x teleconverter on my 5D recently:

It's funny you mentioned the TC. I shall be using the Kenko Pro300 DG which I suspect is a slightly older version than you have.
I took it out today attached to my 100-400 and I'm not too happy with the sharpness. I think it's user error and next time I shall use a monopod.

Do you use it handheld?
