Yet another lens question

Yes
I am looking to get a tele zoom lens for my Canon 550D. I was looking at the Canon 70-200L F4 IS but have been having some second thoughts. I'm now also thinking about the Canon 70-200L F2.8 non IS. Or possibly the Canon 100-400L IS F4-5.6. Budget won't go any further than this (actaully probally not even that far if the wife finds out)

So is the extra stop on the F2.8 worth it, especially considering the extra weight/lack of IS?

Is the extra focal length of the 100-400 worth it, again considering the loss of a stop at the longer focal lengths, and the considerable extra weight.

And also is it worth looking at the independent lens manufacturers ie Sigma/Tamron. Both offer a 20-200 F2.8 considerably cheaper. Also both offer longer zooms.

Cheers

Hmmm - a wide range of things really. Sport/wildlife/general photography. I don't have another tele zoom so this will be my main one as well, which is why I was originally looking at the 70/200 F4.

I'm sort of thinking one of the 70/200 (just not sure which one) and then inverst in the longer zoom later when funds allow.

I would say for that shooting type the 70 - 200 f4 would be more than enough although i could see with professional sport photography the extra zoom on the 100 - 400 would be handy, however i would still get the 70 - 200 f4. i myself am going through the same situation for my next lens, can i warrant the extra £400 for 2.8, portrait and wedding photography is what im going into so i would say yes but again i know the 70 - 200 is also capable of the same thing but with a smaller aperture, if you get chance play with one

I had a play with the 70-200 F2.8 down at Focus show, very nice lens, have heard good things about the lens, but wanted to have a try of one, obviously only a very limited time and subject matter, but I want one now

Could you not go for the 70-200 F4 and buy a Canon 1.4/2 converter for that little bit of extra reach?
