Hi Guys and i'm sorry for another lens question.

I am having a major revamp of my kit.

I am looking for a nice wide angle lens for a 5dmk3 (which I am yet to purchase)

The two considerations to start with are I have the 24-105 L lens or I could save the £500 there and get a body only version.

Budget:

With 24-105 lens around £600

Without kit lens around £1000

If i go for the body only option I would need something that would cope as a walk about lens as well as wide.

I would like a red ring lens however I am open to none canon lenses with similar optical refinement.

Thanks

Jon

Hi Jon

If you're buying the 5D MKIII and haven't a top lens for it, then yes, the 24-105L is the one to get with it - you'll save some buying as part of a kit.

I would then see how you go and look to purchase another lens thats required for your needs.

Enjoy your new body when you get it, it's on my wish list...

I know I can't fully comment in having a 5D1, I had a similar budget when I was deciding on buying, these were my options...

1: 24-105L
2: 17-40L + 50mm 1.8
3: Sigma 24-70 2.8 DG Macro (Old version) + 80mm 1.8

I went option 1 and don't regret it in the slightest, the lens is just so versatile it's unbelievable!

Depends what you currently shoot with & if you like the safety of a nice ranged zoom. Also depends on what other kit you have.

I never used the 24-105L as I found it too bland/boring/heavy/etc for walkaround so had no regrets over selling it.

Hi guys, thanks for the replies,

Lee I currently use a 500d with the kit lens (18 to 55) as a walkabout. also have a nifty fifty and a 150-500mm sigma. so this would be a huge upgrade.

I find 18mm not wide enough when i want to be creative (28.8mm on full frame) so I am tempted by the 17-40L which is within budget (just) but think i might leave the wide lens as Andy suggested and see how I go.

Hi Jon

From your lenses, I'd get the 24-105 and save up for your 17-40 lens - although if I've read your initial post correctly - if you opt for the 5D and 24-105 you've £600 left, you can buy the 17-40 as well new http://camerapricebuster.co.uk/prod.php?n=CanonEF17-40mmf4LUSMLens&p=30 or cheaper if you opt for 2nd hand.

Don't forget at the minute (depending on where you buy from) there is also a cashback from Canon

£160 cashback on the 5D MKIII
£80 cashback on the 17-40mm

I got my 24-105 L as a kit lens with a 5D2 and kept the lens when I sold the 5D2 to get the 5D3. It's a great length for FF and it's a good performer too. I've just recently got a second hand 17-40 f4L for wider shots and that is a great lens for WA on a 5D3. Not tried it on my 7D yet but I doubt it'll get a lot of use on the 7D as it'll spend most of its working life on my 5D3.

Not sure what your total budget is, but you could get the 5D3, 24-105 f4L and 17-40 f4L for £3,033 + postage from Hdew cameras (I got my 5D2 and 5D3 from them) and you get a 3 year warranty with the body and a year UK warranty on the lenses and you can get a VAT receipt from them too.
