I really like the composition of the first, and its well exposed! I think that the second lacks interest, but I like the slightly moody atmosphere.

I do like what you have captured, especially #1. The stones are a great lead in. Not sure on the second to be honest - Moody and all that, but I just don't find it very interesting to look at.

How about bigger pics? You can go up to 800 pixels. They often look much better at that size.

Used carefully kit lenses can produce some excellent shots and a lot of the comments denigrating them is just lens snobbery,I only replaced mine with the Sigma 17-35 because I got it at a bargain price
