YN568 vs Canon 580exII

Wonder if one of you wizened people can help.

i have 2 yn568 and a 580ex2

The 568's need 1 and 1/3 stops (1 1/3) increase in flash exposure compensation to bring them to the same exposure as the 580ex2 in ETTL. Using the histogram to measure as well as the screen on the back of the camera. Surely exposure is exposure and therefor they should light the same.

Any ideas?
 
just found a load of info on this, seems like a design flaw. YN568 underexposes 2 stops when using ettl in bounce mode...

Glad you managed to answer your own question Greg. Helped me too. I had considered getting a 568 to use alongside my 580, so I may just keep looking for another used 580 instead.

Oh and for future reference "wizened" means shrivelled so you may get more helpful replies if you don't refer to members that way. Lol. :exit:

When I tested one I found the same. It's best to use them all off camera and put the canon one on camera.
 
lol.... i do apologise for referring to TP members as shriveled.....you are all of great stature! and you are all WISE!!!

I think the only thing that has shriveled is my brain!!!

Yep, i think the best way forward is to only use the for OCF and keep the canon on. I may buy another canon 580 II so that i have 2 equal pairs...

Don't apologise, some of us are wizened and shrivelled,lol. Re. The flash, I'm like you in that I think I will wait a little longer and get another 580 when funds allow. Just for consistency if nothing else.
 
if you change the metering mode from evaluative to average, it fixes it. Im not sure whether this is the best route to go though. For weddings i need to meter ambient and add flash.

There is a thread in another forum that explains the difference quite clearly, as does Neil V's Tangents blog. Its a significant flaw, and really prevents me using this on camera. But i really got these for off camera/dance floor manual mode...so bang for buck they are still superb. Coupled with the yn622 transceivers you can have a very cost effective light set up for of camera flash.
