Yongnuo yn-560

I don't have one yet, I just put in my order.

My impression from reviews:

Great build quality (Basically a 580 EXII with Yongnuo internals, from what I read)
Huge
Very powerful for the price (basically only overpowered by £200+ flashes)
Great as a slave paired with wireless transceivers e.g. Yongnuo's own RF-603s

Forgive me if I'm being presumptuous, but given you're shooting a 1000D, I'd hazard a guess this would be your only flash other than the built-in pop-up flash? If that's the case, I'd recommend going for the YN-468 over this as it features E-TTL which would mean you can use the flash in much closer to point-and-shoot functionality, as it means the camera can expose correctly, taking into account the flash.

If you want something as powerful as the 560 and with E-TTL, but still want a reasonably cheap gun, you might want to look at the YN-565; Yongnuo themselves describe it as essentially a YN-560 flash with the features of the YN-468. It is £110 which is about as much as the YN-468 + YN-560, but if you're only after on-camera flash or one light work then it could be work it.
 
In which case go for it, as long as you're using the 560 as a slave then you're good.

As long as you're okay using it in manual only with no camera control over the flash you're fine. The 468 and 565 are the only current Yongnuo flashes that can directly replace your Jessops flash if you're using E-TTL at the moment to expose your shots.

If you want to do wireless flash you'll need a set of receivers/transmitters/tranceivers, so bear that in mind.
 
Yes you can, I have been doing for ages. There's no TTL, it's fully manual and theres no guides of any kind on the flash,you'll either have to memorise your GN tables or carry them with you! For that reason it's best off camera where the distance to subject won't change, but it's fine on hotshoe. I use it hotshoe mounted 90% of the time (usually for Macro).

I've shot a night rally with one too.

You can, but it only has manual mode; the camera won't expose correctly when you have the flash on so you'll need to shoot your camera in manual.
 
There is only one tiny issue I had with mine and it's something that will not effect anybody in real use, but

If you select the audible alert for flash ready it takes longer for the flash to recycled, but who need a sound to say it's at full charge.

Also a note when you get one and try to turn it on you MUST hold the on/off button down until ALL the light have gone from left to right otherwise it just powers off again.

Cheers for the heads up. I dont use the sound on my jessops so I doubt I will use it on this one but again thanks for the heads up ;-)
