hi all

I have a few gigs lined up to shoot in some Bars and clubs for a music events company and im looking for a flash to use....

It will be going on a Nikon D5200 - any help on this would be great as its my first time doing this type of work...

Hi Jason,

I have the YN565EX and use it mainly off camera flash with the YN622's and my D90 and have been happy with it. Are you planning on using It on or off camera?

Well, ideally off camera however will obviously mean holding it while taking shots as ill be on my own (may take some time getting use to)... On top of that ill have to but some other kit to make that idea work... What would your on camera recommendations be?

If you are going to be holding the flash and you need ocf you may be able to get away with a TTL cable. Not sure how well or even of it is possible to trigger the yn with the onboard flash via TTL.

Hopefully someone with a bit more knowledge will be round and help.
 
I would leave it on cam and bounce off the ceiling, I have used this flash for similar and been pretty happy with it.
 
thanks all - Ill be using it tonight so will post some results later... just slapped on a Gary Fong Light sphere to take some harshness out of the flash

You don't want to be using a flash shooting gigs! Up the ISO and use the light that's there. Flash will kill the stage light and most likely annoy the band and audience. Fastest way to get yourself shown the door.
 
It went ok - didnt get shown the door as it turns out - i didnt use it that much to me honest as you say - I got it just in case - the low light performance on the d5200 it pretty poor in previous experiences however im pretty pleased with some of the shots last night
 
Ok so heres the excuses... Its was my first gig, only got the one lens (as in the one in this post) and the and venues were tiny - needed something along the lines of 10 or 24mm minimum really on a dx body, but hay ho.. live and learn... still.... really enjoyed it and its part of the learning curve...
